Biography

Born December 14, 1979, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kyle Shanahan is the son of two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Shanahan. He attended Saratoga High School in California while his father served as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, then Cherry Creek High School in Colorado when his father became head coach of the Denver Broncos. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Shanahan accepted a scholarship to Duke University but transferred to the University of Texas at Austin as a walk-on, playing wide receiver and catching fourteen passes for 127 yards during his career. Shanahan began coaching as a graduate assistant at UCLA in 2003 under Karl Dorrell before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as offensive quality control coach under Jon Gruden from 2004 to 2005. In 2006, Gary Kubiak hired him as the Houston Texans' wide receivers coach, making him the youngest position coach in the NFL. He became the league's youngest offensive coordinator in 2008 at age twenty-eight. The Texans finished third in yards per game that season, with quarterback Matt Schaub leading the league in passing yards and wide receiver Andre Johnson leading in receiving yards. After stints as offensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins (2010-2013) and Cleveland Browns (2014), Shanahan joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2015. His 2016 Falcons offense led the league with 540 points and set franchise records in yards per game (415.8) and average yards per play (6.7), helping quarterback Matt Ryan win NFL MVP. Atlanta scored forty-four points in the NFC Championship Game victory over Green Bay before reaching Super Bowl LI. The 49ers hired Shanahan as head coach on February 6, 2017. After starting 0-9 in his first season, he engineered a remarkable turnaround, finishing 6-10. In 2019, Shanahan became only the third coach alongside Tom Landry and Marvin Lewis to start 8-0 after an earlier 0-8 season start, leading the 49ers to a 13-3 record and Super Bowl LIV appearance. He orchestrated a stunning comeback from a seventeen-point halftime deficit against Detroit in the 2023 NFC Championship Game to reach Super Bowl LVIII. Shanahan's career head coaching record stands at 82-67 (.550) in the regular season and 9-5 (.643) in the postseason, ranking third in total wins among 49ers coaches. He has led San Francisco to four NFC Championship Games, two Super Bowl appearances, and three NFC West titles. Shanahan married Amanda O'Donnell in 2005, and they have three children: Stella, Carter, and Lexi.
