Juan Esteban Suárez graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in Economics in 1982. He then began a career in the film industry, working across documentaries, commercials, and feature films. His journey began as a video assist operator on his first film, La Gran Fiesta, where he gained invaluable technical knowledge and organizational skills from continuity supervisor Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity ) and first assistant director Luis Estrada (El Infierno). In 1989, he served as a continuity supervisor on the Academy Award-nominated film Lo que le pasó a Santiago by Jacobo Morales. He later progressed to the role of assistant director and became a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In 1997, Juan produced the music video "Go the Distance" by Ricky Martin for the Spanish version of Disney's Hercules through Buena Vista International. He also took on the role of assistant director for notable music videos such as "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi, "Heaven" by Beyoncé, and "Qué Pretendes" by Bad Bunny and J. Balvin. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with esteemed music video directors, including Carlos Pérez, Colin Telley, Nigel Dick, Wayne Isham, and Sophie Muller, as well as renowned cinematographers such as Janusz Kaminski (Saving Private Ryan), Mauro Fiore (Avatar), Xavier Aguirresarobe (Mar Adentro), Jeff Cronenweth (Fight Club), and Rodrigo Prieto (Barbie), creating impactful commercials for the international market. He participated in several screenwriting and directing workshops at Sundance Labs and considers Un Día de Mayo (Becoming Mayo) his directorial debut.
