Biography

Hassan Tariq (22 October 1927 – 24 April 1982) was one of the most prolific and commercially successful film directors, producers, and screenwriters in the history of Pakistani cinema. Born in Amritsar, British India, he moved to Lahore after the 1947 Partition and began his Lollywood career as an assistant director before making his directorial debut with the successful film Neend in 1959. Over a career spanning more than two decades, Tariq directed over 40 films and became famous for defining the classic Lollywood family drama and romantic genre, delivering 28 "jubilee" hits in Karachi and Lahore. His legendary filmography includes blockbusters such as Kaneez (1965), Devar Bhabhi (1967), Anjuman (1970)—which won him a Nigar Award—Umrao Jan Ada (1972), and Sangdil (1982). Renowned for his cinematic musical sequences and strong creative partnerships with leading stars like Waheed Murad and Noor Jehan, he frequently collaborated with actress Rani, whom he directed in 25 films and later married. Tariq passed away in Lahore in April 1982 at age 54, leaving behind a monumental legacy in South Asian film.
