The Corpse in the Corner

I’ve seen horror films about monsters under the bed, killers in the walls, and ghosts in the machine. But End of Shift does something rarer: it puts the horror in the corner of the room, where it’s been sitting quietly the whole time, and forces you to decide what to do about it. The premise is absurd in the best way—a bar employee, Lívia, has a date scheduled, but there’s a corpse at her feet.

Ten minutes later, I was still thinking about the way she looked at it.

That’s the first thing that strikes you: the economy of it. In just ten minutes, directors Miguel Leandro and Sydney Guterres (who also co-stars as the date) don’t just tell a story; they create a mood, a rhythm, a sense of dread that lingers like the last note of a song. There’s no time for exposition, no room for backstory.

The corpse is there. The date is coming. What do you do?

The film trusts you to fill in the blanks, and that trust is what makes it work. Horror often over-explains, but End of Shift understands that the unknown is scarier than the known. The corpse isn’t the problem.

The problem is what Lívia does next.

The camera lingers on Lívia Marafiga’s face, and that’s where the film’s real tension lives. She’s not screaming. She’s not panicking.

She’s just… thinking. Her performance is a masterclass in restraint. There’s a moment where she kneels beside the body, her fingers hovering just above it, as if she’s afraid to touch it—or maybe afraid it’ll touch her back.
