Years ago, the fearsome Pirate King, Gol D. Roger was executed leaving a huge pile of treasure and the famous "One Piece" behind. Whoever claims the "One Piece" will be named the new King of the Pirates. Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who consumed a "Devil Fruit," decides to follow in the footsteps of his idol, the pirate Shanks, and find the One Piece. It helps, of course, that his body has the properties of rubber and that he's surrounded by a bevy of skilled fighters and thieves to help him along the way. Luffy will do anything to get the One Piece and become King of the Pirates!

Monkey D. Luffy meets the Red Hair Pirates as a young boy living in East Blue, swearing becoming the next Pirate King. 10 years later, Luffy sets sail and experiences first adventures, recruiting the first members of the Straw Hat Pirates.
The season follows Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they enter the Grand Line. After encountering the giant whale Laboon and his caretaker Crocus, they meet Princess Nefertari Vivi and become involved in the conflict against the criminal organization Baroque Works, led by the Warlord Sir Crocodile. Along the way, they also befriend the giants Dorry and Broggy on Little Garden.
Season 3 of One Piece, often called “Drum Island,” follows the Straw Hat Pirates as they search for a doctor after Nami becomes seriously ill. The crew travels to Drum Island, a winter-covered kingdom ruled by the tyrannical Wapol. While trying to save Nami, Luffy and Sanji climb a dangerous mountain to reach the only doctor available, Dr. Kureha. There, they meet Tony Tony Chopper, a shy reindeer who gained human abilities after eating a Devil Fruit and serves as Kureha’s assistant. After confronting Wapol and helping restore hope to the island, Chopper overcomes his past fears and joins the Straw Hat crew as their new doctor, marking an important emotional and strategic addition to the team.
The Straw Hats, with Kureha's assistant Tony Tony Chopper, finally arrive at Arabasta, which is on the verge of civil war. Vivi must reach the rebels and tell them the real cause behind the conflict, but Crocodile, leader of Baroque Works and one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, will not just stand by and watch. In the end, Baroque Works, marine forces, pirates, the royal guards, and the rebel army clash in a battle that will determine the fate of the country itself.
Season 5 of One Piece is mostly made up of original filler stories, meaning they are not part of the main manga storyline but focus on side adventures of the Straw Hat crew. The season begins with the “Dreams!” arc, where each Straw Hat reflects on their personal goals and motivations, highlighting their determination to continue their journey. Next is the “Zenny Pirates” arc, in which the crew encounters an elderly moneylender named Zenny who lives on an island with his unusual group of companions. What starts as a conflict gradually turns into mutual respect as the Straw Hats learn about his past. The final arc, “Rainbow Mist,” traps Luffy and his friends inside a mysterious, time-distorting fog. There they meet children who have been separated from their families for years due to the mist’s strange effects. The crew helps them uncover the truth behind the phenomenon and find a way back home.
The Straw Hats arrive on the Sky Island Skypiea and learn of its connections to Jaya and Mont Blanc Noland's tale of a lost city of gold. As the crew embarks in search of treasure, they become entangled in a three-way war between the native Skypieans, the vengeful Shandians, and the land's cruel "god", Enel.
Season 7 of One Piece, titled “G-8 & Long Ring Long Land,” follows the Straw Hat Pirates through dangerous confrontations and unusual competitions. The season starts with the crew infiltrating a heavily guarded Marine fortress to recover treasure that was taken from them. Using teamwork and clever strategies, they manage to escape despite being surrounded by powerful naval forces. Afterward, they encounter Foxy the Silver Fox and his crew, who challenge them to the Davy Back Fight, a series of pirate games where the losing team must give up crew members. The contests test the Straw Hats’ unity, skills, and loyalty as they struggle against Foxy’s tricky tactics. Later, the crew meets Admiral Aokiji, a high-ranking Marine with overwhelming power. Although he defeats Luffy with ease, he ultimately lets the crew go, but his appearance signals that far stronger enemies await them in the future.
The Straw Hats arrive at the oceanic metropolis of Water 7 to find a shipwright who can repair the Going Merry, as well as potentially join their crew. They soon become targeted by the Franky Family, the city's underground gang, and become involved in a plot within the Galley-La Company. Between the disappearance of Robin and a schism that develops between Luffy and Usopp, the crew begins to fall apart.
The Straw Hats, Sogeking, the Franky Family, and the shipwrights of the Galley-La Company arrive at Enies Lobby aboard the Rocketman to rescue Nico Robin and Franky. Standing in their way, however, are the forces of the World Government, including its deadly assassination unit, CP9. A massive battle ensues between the two sides when Luffy declares war against the World Government.
During their journey through the Florian Triangle, the Straw Hats arrive on a seemingly haunted island called Thriller Bark, where they encounter the Warlord Gecko Moria. Using his Devil Fruit abilities, Moria steals the Straw Hats' shadows. With the help of a mysterious talking skeleton named Brook, the crew must regain their shadows before sunrise in order to survive.
The Straw Hat Pirates arrive at the final island of the Grand Line's first half, Sabaody Archipelago. While searching for a means to pass under the Red Line into the New World, they come into conflict with a deadly slave trading ring that sells to the World Nobles. Luffy and Zoro are labelled as two of the Eleven Supernovas, rookies of significant bounties who have simultaneously arrived at the archipelago. A chain reaction of events engulfs the archipelago in chaos, and the Straw Hats are faced with their greatest challenge yet.
After his defeat at the hands of Kuma at the Sabaody Archipelago, Luffy is sent flying and crash lands on Amazon Lily, an island exclusive to women that executes males on sight. As he tries to find a way off the island and back to his crew, Luffy makes unexpected friends and foes, while also learning of his brother's imminent peril.
Luffy puts finding his crew on hold in favor of rescuing his brother Ace from the underwater prison Impel Down. With Boa Hancock's help, he manages to infiltrate the facility. However, fulfilling his objective and escaping the hellish prison might be easier said than done. Having failed to reach Ace before he was transferred, Luffy and his companions escape from Impel Down and travel to Marineford, the base of Marine Headquarters. With the odds stacked high against him, the imminent threat of Whitebeard, and the ulterior motives of pirates that wish to overthrow the Emperor, Luffy struggles to hold his own in this titanic clash of powers.
The Straw Hat Pirates finally arrive at Fishman Island. There, the crew learn the history of Fisher Tiger and the ongoing discrimination between humans and fishman, while the New Fishman Pirates plot to overtake Ryugu Kingdom and make fishman be recognized as the supreme race.
Upon finally entering the New World, the Straw Hat Pirates immediately receive a distress call from residents of Punk Hazard, who state that a samurai is attacking them. Without hesitation, Luffy sets out to the blazing island, with Vice Admiral Smoker hot on his tail. On the supposedly death-ridden and empty island, the Straw Hats soon must contend with both the G-5 Marines, led by Vice Admiral Smoker, and the mad scientist Caesar Clown, whose deadly experiments must be stopped.
The Straw Hat Pirates and Trafalgar Law, together with Kin'emon, Momonosuke and the captured Caesar Clown, travel to Dressrosa with the goal of taking down the nation's king, Warlord of the Sea Donquixote Doflamingo. However, they soon set into motion a series of world-changing events, as their actions interact unexpectedly with those of larger forces at play.
A sequence of unexpected events shakes the world order, and Doflamingo proves to be a challenge that even some of the strongest warriors cannot overcome.
After defeating Doflamingo, the Straw Hats, Trafalgar Law, Kin'emon, and Kanjuro arrive on Zou, in order to reunite with Sanji and the others. However, they discover that Sanji has been swept up in a set of personal and political entanglements and that Zou has been subjected to a siege by Jack of the Beasts Pirates.
Luffy, Nami, Chopper, Brook, and the minks Pekoms, Pedro, and Carrot head to Whole Cake Island, where Big Mom of the Four Emperors resides. Nicknamed the Sanji Retrieval Team, the group seeks to rescue their crewmate Sanji from his arranged marriage with Charlotte Pudding, set up to finalize a political alliance between the Charlotte Family and the Vinsmoke Family. However, during their operation, they become involved in a plot to assassinate Big Mom herself.
The Straw Hat Pirates' actions against the Big Mom Pirates are revealed to the world. Luffy's group is on its way to Wano Country while the Revolutionary Army prepares for their next move. Meanwhile, royalty across the globe gathers for the Reverie, without knowing that a shadow-like figure is pulling the strings of the World.
The Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance gather their forces in Wano Country and prepare for their inevitable clash against the Beasts Pirates. The history of Kozuki Oden and his ties to Wano Country, Whitebeard and Gol D. Roger are revealed, and the Alliance assaults Onigashima to take down the allied forces of Kaidou and Big Mom once and for all. The resulting battle, as well as the events during the recent Levely, cause the world to go through dramatic changes.
The aftermaths of both the Levely and the Raid on Onigashima, as well as the erasure of the Lulusia Kingdom, cause major shifts across the world that could lead to global war. The Straw Hat Pirates, following their Log Pose, arrive at the mysterious, futuristic island Egghead where the super genius Dr. Vegapunk resides. However, after being tipped off about Vegapunk's research into the Void Century, the World Government decides to dispatch a CP0 team to assassinate Vegapunk. Betrayal and intrigue on all sides leads to a Marine siege on the island that will escalate into an incident that will shock the world.
After a daring escape from the Future Island Egghead, the Straw Hat Crew set their course for a legendary destination. Joined by the mighty Giant Warrior Pirates, they finally reach Elbaph, the long-awaited Land of Giants. New encounters with Giants, and long hoped-for reunions unfold. A colossal new chapter begins as the crew heads into an adventure unlike anything before, all in the pursuit of the ultimate treasure, the "One Piece!"
Telling somebody to start a show with 1,155 episodes feels borderline rude. It’s less a recommendation than a long-term lifestyle change. latestnetflix.com's take is that i ducked One Piece for years for exactly that reason.
Twenty-two seasons, a quarter-century on the air, and a fandom that talks about arcs the way historians talk about dynasties—how is any of that supposed to feel approachable? But once you give yourself over to Eiichiro Oda’s world as Toei Animation has been adapting it since 1999, the scale stops feeling like excess. The length is the experience.
You don’t just watch it. You live with it long enough for it to live back.
Strip it down and the premise is classic shounen material: Monkey D. Luffy, a rubber-bodied kid, sails the Grand Line chasing a legendary treasure. But One Piece isn’t really small enough for that summary.
It’s a huge, unruly anti-authoritarian saga disguised as pirate adventure. Early on, especially, the anime looks rougher than modern viewers may expect. It doesn’t have that polished seasonal sheen.
What it has instead is elasticity—in the drawings, in the emotion, in the way bodies tell the political story. Villains are often grotesquely oversized, swollen with greed and power, while Luffy stays wiry, spring-loaded, impossible to pin down. His rubber body isn’t just a power set.
It’s his whole philosophy made visible. The world crushes, he snaps back.
A lot of that spirit comes straight from Mayumi Tanaka. She’s been Luffy’s voice for twenty-five years, and the performance never feels routine. Tanaka has said she avoids reading ahead in the manga because she wants the turns of the story to hit her fresh in the booth.

The series is praised as one of the strongest long-running action-adventure anime thanks to its imaginative world, emotionally resonant arcs, and a crew whose dreams and relationships feel genuinely meaningful. At the same time, very slow pacing, heavy recaps, and uneven animation and fight choreography make the experience exhausting for some, latestnetflix.com argues, especially over hundreds of episodes.
Toei ran One Piece like a newspaper for 26 years. Fuji TV. Weekly. Almost no long breaks. Then producer Ryuta Koike got on a livestream in October 2025 and said the machine would cap at 26 new episodes a year from 2026, two cours, after a January through March rest. Koike called it a "strategic decision to support the advancement and evolution of the anime series." Historically 11 to 12 episodes covered four to five manga volumes. The new pitch is more of Eiichiro Oda's tempo per episode. Fans have heard pacing promises every time Dressrosa stretched a chapter into a recap. The people who actually drew a weekly show for a quarter century did not get a quote.
Kazuki Yao had been Franky since episode 233 in May 2005. In December 2024 he posted that there was "a rift between me and the ideal Franky I envisioned," so he was stepping off the Sunny. Health. Jump Festa 2025 turned into a graduation. Subaru Kimura, the voice of Aoi Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen, took the shipwright with Yao's blessing. First main Straw Hat recast in the original anime. ,
Sabo was dirtier. Toru Furuya admitted a four-and-a-half-year affair with a fan in her 30s, plus assault and getting her to have an abortion. He quit Sabo and Detective Conan's Rei. Toei said his agency asked to pull him and they would recast. That is not a health story. That is a 70-year-old veteran torching a revolutionary's voice because he could not keep his hands off a fan.
Wit Studio's The One Piece exists because, in an interview, Wit CEO George Wada said Oda told him the old animation might not excite a new generation. Netflix is paying for a second anime of the same story while Toei is still broadcasting the first. People already mix this 1999 series with the 2023 live-action. The live-action is a different show. This one is Mayumi Tanaka's Luffy, still rubber, still late, still the one that burned through filler islands so the manga could stay ahead.
The 2024 pause after episode 1122 was the dress rehearsal. Variety called the Egghead break unexpected. Toei parked the arc for six months, ran a 21-episode Fish-Man Island recut, and moved the timeslot to Sunday 11:15 p.m. The kids' morning slot is gone. Adults who grew up with it can stay up. The weekly era cannot.
