Carissa Perusset
Angel

Horror pierces Vivian's life when her husband, Burhan, decides to marry Angel, an avaricious young woman who uses witchcraft to terrorize her family.
Indonesian horror has a house style I can recite without looking. Ghost in the corner of the frame. Camera parked on a dying bulb.
Score hanging on one sour note until your jaw aches. Guna Guna Istri Muda knows that grammar. Razka Robby Ertanto uses it, then walks off. His 2024 remake of the 1977 film is not interested in a polite haunting.
It is interested in the people who rot in place.

The opening looks posed, almost painted. Vivian (Lulu Tobing), the first wife, stands in a sunlit garden, half her face in shadow. She is not screaming.
She is not crying. She is watching Burhan (Anjasmara) walk his new bride, Angel (Carissa Perusset), into the house that used to be hers. The camera refuses the cut.
That hold is the first trick. You start caring about the marriage before it has finished dying.
Ertanto directs with a slow, exact hand. He skips the murky closet lighting a lot of Indonesian horror treats as a personality. Daytime goes gold.
Night goes deep blue and purple. Pretty, and the prettiness is bait. The more the frame glows, the more you wait for the rot underneath.
I kept thinking of The Handmaiden, Park Chan-wook's lush, nasty story of people lying with style. Ertanto wants some of that texture. He does not have that film's cut-glass control, and he does not pretend to.
"A visually striking horror with strong performances but struggles to escape familiar witchcraft tropes."
Viewers appreciate the film’s cinematic quality, noting its fresh visual approach to horror that avoids excessive darkness. The cast, particularly veterans like Lulu Tobing, is praised for delivering compelling performances, though some feel the younger actors lack the same depth. The story’s reliance on witchcraft to drive conflict is seen as both engaging and predictable, latestnetflix.com contends, leaving some wanting more originality.
Spoiler warning

Anjasmara did not sell Guna Guna Istri Muda as a prestige horror trophy. At the Jakarta gala, days before Falcon Black opened the film on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, he said playing Burhan was "very challenging but satisfying." Then the warning. "I have a message for men who want a young wife: please be careful." Tempo printed it. The plot is that warning with teeth. Burhan, already married to Vivian, takes Angel as a younger wife. She is not satisfied. She keeps other men, hires a dukun, latestnetflix.com argues, and turns witchcraft on the household.
Director Razka Robby Ertanto told Tempo the movie was "very entertaining," and that Anjasmara and Lulu Tobing already had chemistry "built over a long time." Falcon Black, the Falcon Pictures genre label, billed it as a remake of the 1977 klenik picture Guna-Guna Isteri Muda, directed by B.Z. Kadaryono from a script by Ackyl Anwari, with Aedy Moward, Farida Pasha, Rina Hassim, and Roy Marten in the old cast. Indonesian Wikipedia and Liputan6 both treat the 2024 film as that remake. Liputan6, writing in October, still had a November 28 cinema date. Tempo, closer to opening, had the gala and Wednesday the 27th. Netflix later carried the same title in the U.S. catalog. , ,

Producer Frederica, in a written note to Liputan6, said Falcon was "happy to present Guna Guna Istri Muda to the audience" and that the first-look stills were "an early picture of how interesting the story and characters" were. She also said the company was optimistic the film would "touch the heart and entertain," not only scare people. Ertanto's October note called the stills a look at "a story full of conflict and emotion" and "an exploration of love and sacrifice." That is the studio pitch. The horror engine is still guna-guna, the spellwork that gives the title its bite.
Lulu Tobing plays Vivian, the first wife who stays after Burhan is allowed to take Angel. "Playing Vivian took me on a deep emotional journey," she told Tempo. "She is a loyal wife trapped in a situation she never imagined, and I hope the audience can feel her struggle." Carissa Perusset, 26 in that coverage, said Angel was her first role of that kind. "The role required me to explore extreme ambition and manipulation, something new for me as an actress." Tempo's synopsis has Angel teaming with dukun Sumi, Happy Salma, to seize Burhan's wealth and try to kill both spouses. Elang El Gibran plays Roy, an earlier casualty of Angel's charm who spills the secret. Abidzar Al-Ghifari is Leo, Burhan's friend. Donny Damara is Aki Kholil. ,
Film Indonesia credits Ertanto as director, Alim Sudio and Titien Wattimena as screenwriters, Frederica as producer, and Odyssey Flores on camera. Netflix's page lists Anjasmara, Lulu Tobing, and Carissa Perusset up front, with Elang El Gibran, Abidzar Al-Ghifari, Happy Salma, and Donny Damara in the longer cast. Runtime sits around 97 to 98 minutes depending on the listing. The U.S. overview is blunt. Horror hits Vivian after Burhan marries Angel, "an avaricious young woman who uses witchcraft to terrorize her family." Falcon's final trailer on YouTube still dates the cinema bow to 27 November. , , ,
The gossip on this title was never a leaked salary or a walk-off. It was a 1977 pelakor-and-dukun plot coming back as a Falcon Black event movie, with a married leading man doing press like a public service announcement. Wikipedia listed 28 November. Tempo's gala coverage moved it to 27. That one-day slide is the kind of small schedule rumor Indonesian genre films live on. Nobody printed a blow-up on set. The talk was the remake, the first looks, and whether a young-wife curse story still lands when the star tells husbands to watch themselves.
