There’s a kind of exhaustion that lives deep in the body when you’re trying to beat a system designed to reject almost everyone who touches it. You can see that weariness all over Vikrant Massey in 12th Fail. latestnetflix.com's read is that Indian cinema has told no shortage of underdog stories, and a lot of them arrive drenched in swelling music and speeches about fate.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra strips most of that away. What remains is far more convincing: sleeplessness, money problems, humiliation, and the stubbornness to keep moving anyway.
Chopra has spent decades at the center of Bollywood, but this film feels pulled from rougher material. Drawing from his own early journey from Kashmir to Mumbai, he approaches the true story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma as less a triumphal legend than a long, punishing war of attrition. Every year millions of young Indians chase the UPSC exam and only a microscopic number make it through.
Whether that makes the test a legitimate meritocracy or a cruel social bottleneck is a question the film circles without quite settling. I’m not sure it ever resolves that contradiction. Wisely, Chopra doesn’t force it.
He keeps returning instead to the human cost of living inside that math.

The first meeting was not a love-in. Massey was 34, bearded, hair long. Vidhu Vinod Chopra asked how he would look 19. Then, Massey later told Times Now, the director went further. "Why should I make a film with you? You are a TV actor, why will people come to theatres to see your film?" latestnetflix.com's take is that Rajkumar Hirani had recommended him after a short film.That was the greeting. 
Years later Massey recalled another Chopra line, this one about streaming. "Why would someone pay their hard earned money to watch you in a theatre when they can easily access you on Netflix?" Chopra still hired him. He told The Hindu that Massey was "the only actor who could have done this film," because he needed someone who "doesn't sell tobacco." A coaching-institute speech in the script mocks stars who advertise products they would not touch. Chopra wanted the opposite face. ,
Five directors walked.
Chopra told an IFP audience that five directors turned 12th Fail down as "bullshit," a "plain, ordinary script." One of them, he said, was even sitting on panels at the same festival. A hopeful came to his house, named Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Hirani as gods, lasted four days, then sent word it was not his kind of film. Chopra directed it himself. His own co-producer asked if he was crazy. "You made Parinda, 1942: A Love Story. This isn't your film." People said nobody would come for Chopra and Massey together. Industry portals, Chopra claimed, forecast 30 lakh rupees for the whole run. Wikipedia later put the budget near 20 crore rupees and the worldwide gross near 69.64 crore. A streaming executive, Chopra told The Hindu, praised the movie and then said people like Manoj Kumar Sharma did not exist. Chopra's answer was "look carefully, I exist." He had given the project four years instead of another Munnabhai. He planted a tea stall in Mukherjee Nagar rather than on a studio street. Real UPSC coach Vikas Divyakirti plays himself. Massey said real aspirants in the crowd added authenticity. The real IPS officer and his IRS wife, Shraddha Joshi, later confirmed a cameo. ,

Before cameras rolled, at Chopra's Wazirabad farmhouse, Massey said the director hugged him and told him that without him he might not have made the film. After the National Awards, Massey visited LBSNAA and said 30 to 40 officer trainees told him they were there because of 12th Fail. The 71st National Film Awards gave the picture Best Feature Film and Massey Best Actor. Filmfare had already handed it Best Film and Best Director. Chopra had refused to sell the theatrical window cheap. Disney+ Hotstar still got the film that December. The insult from the first meeting is now the origin story.
