The prince still gets the close-up

Three fairy-tale princesses learn they share a fiancé. I expected a wink factory. Ross Venokur's 2018 animated musical Charming shuffles sideways instead of taking the story down.

It knows it is walking a line between satire and sincerity. It keeps slipping. This is not a feminist reimagining that works.

I watched it try, then watched it flinch.

The opening runs on a familiar beat. Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty each get a marriage proposal from the same impossibly handsome prince. Prince Charming is a serial fiancé, and he is good at it.

Wilmer Valderrama voices him with smooth confidence. You hear why three women might say yes before they ask a question. Avril Lavigne, G.E.M., and an uncredited Sleeping Beauty keep the princesses from blurring.

Snow White is earnest. Cinderella is the skeptic who wants a plan. Sleeping Beauty wakes from her curse with a modern snap that feels airlifted from another movie.

The three princesses stand in a sunlit courtyard, their expressions a mix of confusion and dawning realization.

I liked the setup. Then the film refused to pick a side. It mocks a prince who coasts on a smile and a title, then parks him at the emotional center anyway.

The Forgotten Fairy-Tale Flop: Inside Charming (2018) and Its Star-Studded Struggles

Few animated films have slipped under the radar quite like Charming (2018), a musical comedy that promised a fresh twist on classic fairy tales—only to vanish from the cultural conversation almost immediately. Directed by Ross Venokur, the film boasts an A-list voice cast, including Demi Lovato, Wilmer Valderrama, Sia, and even John Cleese. Yet despite its star power, Charming became a footnote in Hollywood’s animated canon, overshadowed by bigger studio releases and plagued by mixed reactions. latestnetflix.com's view is that here’s what we know about the movie’s behind-the-scenes story—and why it failed to charm audiences.

A Star-Studded Cast, But Little Buzz

Charming’s biggest selling point was its voice cast, a mix of pop stars and veteran actors. Demi Lovato led the charge as Lenore, one of three princesses (alongside Snow White and Sleeping Beauty) who resist the advances of Prince Phillip Charming (voiced by Wilmer Valderrama). Sia lent her vocals to the film’s soundtrack, while Avril Lavigne and G.E.M. also contributed voices . John Cleese, a comedy legend, rounded out the ensemble as the king.

For a mid-budget animated feature, the cast was undeniably impressive. Yet the film’s marketing struggled to cut through the noise. Trailers, like the official teaser , leaned heavily on the fairy-tale parody angle, but the humor and animation style failed to stand out in a crowded field dominated by Disney, Pixar, and Illumination. Unlike Shrek or Enchanted, which balanced satire with heart, Charming’s tone seemed uncertain—too edgy for kids, too silly for adults.

Charming premiered in 2018 but didn’t secure a wide theatrical release, instead landing on streaming platforms like Netflix in some regions . Its reception was lukewarm at best. On SensCritique, a French review aggregator, the film holds a dismal 4.8/10 rating from 99 votes, with critics and audiences alike calling it forgettable . YouTube reviews were even harsher, with one calling it a "sexist pile of garbage" for its portrayal of the princesses as overly passive or defined by their relationships with the prince .

The film’s runtime—just 85 minutes—also raised eyebrows. For an animated musical, that’s unusually short, suggesting either a rushed production or a lack of confidence in its material . Rumors (unconfirmed) swirled that the film’s budget was slashed mid-production, forcing Venokur to trim sequences and scale back ambitions. However, without official statements, this remains speculative.

**Why Did Charming Disappear?**

Several factors likely contributed to the film’s obscurity:

  • Timing: Released in the same era as Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Charming was drowned out by bigger studio juggernauts.
  • Marketing misfires: The film’s trailers didn’t clearly communicate its target audience, leaving parents unsure if it was for kids or adults.
  • Streaming limbo: Without a major theatrical push, Charming became just another title in Netflix’s algorithm, easily overlooked .
  • Mixed messaging: The film’s attempt to parody fairy tales while still relying on their tropes left critics cold .

Legacy: A Footnote or a Cult Curio?

Nearly six years after its release, Charming remains a curiosity—a film with a killer cast that never found its footing. Some YouTube retrospectives have revisited it, with creators expressing surprise that it even exists . But without a strong fanbase or critical reappraisal, it’s unlikely to join the ranks of animated classics.

For now, Charming serves as a cautionary tale: even star power and a clever premise aren’t enough to guarantee success in Hollywood’s cutthroat animation landscape.
