Holland still knows how to make a dumb summer movie fun

The pitch for Malibu Rescue made me roll my eyes. Valley kids versus snobby Malibu junior lifeguards, fighting over a beach tower. Underdog sports movie, only with sunscreen and boogie boards.

Then I saw the director. Savage Steve Holland. Better Off Dead. One Crazy Summer. Loud VHS comedies that were also a little sweet.

If anyone could turn junior lifeguards into that kind of tape, it would be him.

He does. Mostly.

The movie is 69 minutes and it knows the assignment. Tyler, played by Ricardo Hurtado, is a Valley troublemaker sentenced to community service in the junior lifeguard program. He and his misfit friends have to prove themselves against the Malibu kids who have owned the sand for years.

There is a training montage, including a Rocky-style run up the Santa Monica Pier. The rivalry stays more playful than vicious. The third-act contest turns on teamwork and heart.

If you have seen The Bad News Bears, The Mighty Ducks, or Surf's Up, you already know the skeleton. Holland's tone is the actual difference. Broad jokes, not mean ones.

One-liners that sound like they were scribbled on a napkin after too much coffee. The kids commit, so the slapstick works.

Behind the Scenes of Malibu Rescue: Netflix’s Splashy Teen Comedy

Malibu Rescue (2019) arrived on Netflix as a lighthearted, sun-soaked comedy about underdog kids proving themselves in a high-stakes lifeguard competition. Directed by cult-favorite filmmaker Savage Steve Holland—known for his quirky 1980s teen classics like Better Off Dead—the movie promised a mix of humor, heart, and beachside action. But what went into making this family-friendly flick, and how did it land with audiences? latestnetflix.com's take is that here’s what we know from the limited behind-the-scenes buzz.

A Director with a Cult Following

Savage Steve Holland’s name carries weight among fans of offbeat teen comedies, and Malibu Rescue marked his return to live-action filmmaking after years in animation and TV. Holland’s signature style—whimsical humor, underdog protagonists, and a nostalgic vibe—was a natural fit for the movie’s premise. While the evidence doesn’t reveal much about his creative process on set, his past work suggests he brought a playful, irreverent energy to the project .

The film’s runtime clocks in at a tight 69 minutes, a brisk pace that aligns with Holland’s tendency to keep stories lean and fast-moving . Whether this was a deliberate choice or a byproduct of budget constraints remains unclear, but it’s a notable contrast to the sprawling runtimes of many modern family films.

The Cast: Young Stars and a Surprise Cameo

Malibu Rescue assembled a mix of rising young actors and a few familiar faces. Ricardo Hurtado (School of Rock) and Breanna Yde (The Thundermans) led the ensemble as Tyler and Gina, two kids determined to prove themselves at the elite Malibu Junior Rescue program. The supporting cast included Jackie R. Jacobson, Abby Donnelly, and Alkoya Brunson, all of whom brought their own comedic and dramatic chops to the roles .

One of the bigger surprises was the appearance of Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210), who played a supporting role as a seasoned lifeguard. Ziering’s involvement added a touch of nostalgia for older viewers, though his screen time was limited. Curtis Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds) also popped up in a smaller part, reinforcing the movie’s blend of teen antics and adult eccentricities .

Behind the scenes, the young cast seemed to gel quickly. In a short interview clip, Jackie R. Jacobson hinted at the fun, collaborative atmosphere on set, though she didn’t dive into specifics . Rumors of on-set pranks or inside jokes haven’t surfaced in the available evidence, but given Holland’s reputation for fostering creative environments, it’s easy to imagine the shoot being a lively one.

Mixed Reception and a Quick Sequel

Malibu Rescue didn’t exactly set the world on fire with critics. Reviews were lukewarm, with one outlet giving it a 3.1/10 rating based on 62 votes . The film’s lighthearted tone and predictable plot may have worked for its target audience of younger viewers, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression on critics or older audiences.

Despite the tepid response, Netflix greenlit a sequel, Malibu Rescue: The Next Wave (2020), which expanded the story with more action and adventure . The sequel’s existence suggests the original film performed well enough with its core demographic to justify a follow-up, even if it didn’t become a breakout hit.

Thin on Drama, Big on Fun

Unlike many Hollywood productions, Malibu Rescue doesn’t seem to have been plagued by behind-the-scenes drama. There are no reports of on-set feuds, budget overruns, or creative clashes—just a straightforward, family-friendly movie designed to entertain. The available evidence doesn’t include interviews with the director or cast about challenges they faced, so any struggles (like filming in the ocean or wrangling young actors) remain undocumented.

What is clear is that the movie leaned into its strengths: a sunny setting, a relatable underdog story, and a cast of charismatic young performers. The trailer and behind-the-scenes clips suggest a shoot filled with laughter, beach games, and the kind of low-stakes fun that defines many Netflix originals .

The Verdict

Malibu Rescue may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it delivered exactly what it promised: a breezy, feel-good comedy for younger audiences. With Savage Steve Holland at the helm and a cast of rising stars, it was a solid, if unremarkable, addition to Netflix’s library. The real story here isn’t scandal or controversy—it’s a reminder that sometimes, a simple, fun movie is enough.
