The dragon dies too fast

I wanted junk-food wuxia. Plot as furniture, fights as the meal. For twenty minutes Double World plays along.

A village under siege. A camera that wants to be epic. Then it cuts to Henry Lau as Dong Yilong, frowning at a map like homework he cannot finish.

The talk is functional when it is not clunky. Stephen Tung Wai's choreography is inventive enough that I nearly stopped minding the words. Nearly.

Then the tournament starts and the film forgets how to be a film. Rules arrive in one breathless speech, a writer late for the next punch. Heroes scale a wall of chains while giant metal balls swing past, American Ninja Warrior dressed as Game of Thrones.

Next beat, they sit at a campfire and dump plot like a group project nobody studied for. A teen romance subplot. A character gets impaled on a spear.

The death lands with the same force as a missed bus.

A warrior leaps across a chasm of chains, dodging a swinging metal ball in a high-stakes obstacle course.

Teddy Chan already proved he can put people inside spectacle. His 2009 film Bodyguards and Assassins kept the crowd scenes and the close-ups in the same movie. Double World feels assembled to tick boxes. The tournament, the beasts, the underdog with a sad past all get a scene, and none of it earns the next one.

Leading the ensemble is Henry Lau (Super Junior-M), who plays the protagonist, Dong Yilong. Lau, a K-pop idol turned actor, brought a fresh face to the project, though his casting raised eyebrows among purists expecting a more seasoned martial artist. Peter Ho, a veteran of Hong Kong cinema, plays the villainous Tian Ji, while Jiang Luxia—known for her roles in The Grandmaster and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny—delivers some of the film’s most fluid fight sequences .
