Love, written down, then half-remembered

I've always been a sucker for stories about letters. The physical object does work a text never will. Ink into paper, a thumb pressed too hard, a fold that still holds a secret.

Augustine Frizzell's The Last Letter from Your Lover is built on that fact and leans on it. It is a dual-timeline romance hung on handwritten pages from an affair that refuses to stay in the past. The setup wants to gush.

Frizzell, most of the time, will not let it.

1960s first. Jennifer Stirling, Shailene Woodley, trapped in a loveless marriage to a wealthy, emotionally distant husband. Then the present, where Felicity Jones is Ellie Haworth, a journalist recovering from her own romantic wreckage.

Ellie finds Jennifer's letters in a newspaper archive. They are addressed to a mysterious "B." They describe a passionate affair Jennifer cannot remember after a car accident left her with amnesia.

Ellie cannot leave the letters alone. Hunting the story, she starts to want the feeling on those pages.

A close-up of a handwritten letter, ink smudged and slightly faded, resting on a wooden desk beside an old-fashioned typewriter.

I am wary of dual timelines. Too often they stall, stretching a story that could have been told in half the time. Sometimes past and present actually talk.

This film does a bit of both. I stayed with the 1960s. Lush cinematography, period detail, Woodley and Callum Turner as Anthony O'Hare with chemistry that feels urgent.

Behind the Scenes of The Last Letter from Your Lover: Balancing Two Eras and Two Leading Ladies

Augustine Frizzell’s 2021 romantic drama The Last Letter from Your Lover weaves together two love stories across decades, but the film’s own journey to the screen had its share of challenges—particularly in keeping its dual narratives and leading actresses equally compelling. Based on Jojo Moyes’ 2011 novel, the Netflix adaptation stars Shailene Woodley and Felicity Jones as women separated by time but connected by a trove of secret love letters. While the film’s premise promised sweeping romance, latestnetflix.com maintains, its production revealed a few behind-the-scenes hurdles that shaped its final form.

A Tale of Two Timelines—and Two Stars

The movie’s structure—flipping between 1960s London and the present day—required careful calibration to avoid overshadowing one storyline. Director Augustine Frizzell admitted in an interview that balancing the two eras was a struggle, especially when it came to giving equal weight to Woodley and Jones’ performances. "It was hard to keep them equal," Frizzell told CheatSheet . The concern wasn’t just about screen time but ensuring both actresses’ emotional arcs felt fully realized, a challenge amplified by the film’s dual-timeline conceit.

Woodley and Jones, who play Ellie Haworth (modern-day journalist) and Jennifer Stirling (1960s housewife), respectively, spoke about the unique pressures of sharing the spotlight in a story where their characters’ fates intertwine. In a joint interview with RogerEbert.com, the actresses described their approach to the film’s central mystery—Ellie’s discovery of Jennifer’s forbidden love letters—as a collaborative effort. "We wanted to honor the idea that love stories are universal, no matter the era," Jones said, while Woodley added that the film’s themes of longing and connection resonated deeply with both of them . Their chemistry, however, wasn’t the only relationship Frizzell had to manage.

Directorial Dilemmas: Keeping the Romance Alive

Frizzell’s previous work, including the critically acclaimed Never Have I Ever (as co-creator), had prepared her for juggling multiple storylines, but The Last Letter from Your Lover presented a different kind of challenge. The film’s romantic core hinged on the authenticity of its two love affairs—one set in the repressed 1960s, the other in the more liberated present. Frizzell’s task was to ensure neither relationship felt like a mere echo of the other, a balance she described as "tricky" .

The director also had to navigate the logistical complexities of shooting in two distinct time periods. While the 1960s sequences relied on period-accurate costumes and set design to evoke nostalgia, the modern-day scenes required a grittier, more contemporary aesthetic. Frizzell’s solution? Lean into the contrasts. "The past had to feel lush and tactile, while the present needed to feel raw and immediate," she hinted in a behind-the-scenes interview . The approach paid off visually, though some critics later noted the film’s pacing struggled to maintain momentum between the two eras .

Critical Reception: A Mixed Love Letter

Upon its release, The Last Letter from Your Lover received a lukewarm response from critics, who praised its performances but questioned its execution. The Hollywood Reporter called it "a visually sumptuous but emotionally uneven adaptation," noting that Woodley and Jones’ chemistry saved the film from feeling like a "period-piece pastiche" . Meanwhile, SensCritique awarded it a modest 6.3/10, with reviewers highlighting the film’s strengths in production design but criticizing its "predictable" narrative beats .

Audience reactions were similarly divided. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 58% critics score but a higher 72% audience score, suggesting that viewers connected with its romantic themes even if critics found it formulaic . The discrepancy underscores a common divide in romantic dramas: while the genre often prioritizes emotional payoff over narrative innovation, The Last Letter from Your Lover walked a fine line between the two.

What’s Next for the Cast?

Since the film’s release, its stars have moved on to high-profile projects. Shailene Woodley, who also executive produced the movie, has since appeared in Dumb Money (2023) and the Three Women series, while Felicity Jones reunited with Rogue One co-star Diego Luna for Andor. Joe Alwyn, who plays Jennifer’s husband in the 1960s storyline, has remained a fixture in prestige dramas, including Stars at Noon (2022). As for Frizzell, she continues to work in television, most recently directing episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty (2024).

For fans of the novel, the film remains a faithful—if imperfect—adaptation. Moyes’ original story, which interweaves the two love affairs with more intricate detail, left some book readers wishing for deeper character development . Yet, as a standalone romantic drama, The Last Letter from Your Lover succeeds in capturing the bittersweet allure of love letters lost and found, even if its behind-the-scenes challenges occasionally peek through.
