There’s a particular kind of panic that comes when the hidden supports of a comfortable life disappear all at once. That’s where Norma (2023) begins. Norma is a woman in her sixties, living in the sleepy, conservative Argentine town of Las Tucas, and when her longtime maid Rosita suddenly quits, the machinery of her world just jams. It could have been broad farce.
In Santiago Giralt’s hands, and with Mercedes Morán at the center, it turns into something stranger and meaner and a lot more amusing.
I’ve seen plenty of midlife-awakening movies that march straight toward an Eat Pray Love revelation and call it depth. Norma is more sly than that. It’s smaller too, and sharper around the edges. Maybe that has something to do with Morán co-writing the script with Giralt from his unpublished novel.
She understands this woman down to the bone. She knows the body language of someone who has spent forty years mistaking manners for an inner life.
Morán has been one of the great faces of Argentine cinema for years, and if you’ve seen her in La Ciénaga, you already know nobody does bourgeois suffocation quite like she does. Here she turns that same skill into comic gold. In the opening stretch, she holds her shoulders so high and tight they look bolted into place.

Mercedes Moran told Infobae on opening day that Norma felt more hers than other roles. She stars as Norma Lera. She also takes her first screenplay credit, sharing it with director Santiago Giralt. "I feel it is more mine than others," she said. Giralt brought an unpublished novel, Senales de humo, and asked her to chase the woman on the page. She hesitated, then wrote. "We did it this way, with no pretension, with no ambition beyond getting together and giving this woman a life." Digicine opened the 93-minute comedy in Argentina on 19 October 2023. Alejandro Awada plays Gustavo, the husband parked in his own world. Lorena Vega plays Judith, a Buenos Aires psychologist with red hair and alternative therapies. Claudia Cantero is Rosita, the domestic worker who resigns without a speech. Diego Batlle at Otros Cines noted that Norma is an anagram of Moran. La Nacion's Pablo De Vita watched her find a box of marijuana after the resignation and smile for the first time. Moran told Infobae the character is dissatisfied, nervous, and stuck on pills that no longer work. The humor, she said, is the point. Radio host Elizabeth Vernaci turns up as officer Aguirre, someone who already knows Norma too well. Resumen de la Region reported cameras in Alta Gracia from 24 October 2022, first on Achaval Rodriguez, then Belisario Roldan by Escuela San Martin, then the cemetery. The shoot continued in Cordoba capital and Montevideo through 3 December. Giralt told GPS Audiovisual that he and Moran were raised in the interior and wanted a woman who lived by the town's rules until the floor moved.
