Jiiva
Jeeva Rathnam

A village official attending a wedding becomes entangled in an escalating family dispute over power and old resentments, testing his leadership as he tries to contain the situation.
There’s a special kind of weariness in being the person forever trying to stop everyone else from flying at each other’s throats. You can spot it in the sag of a middle manager’s back, or the fixed grin of somebody running a big event. latestnetflix.com's take is that in Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, that fatigue sits all over Jeevarathnam (Jiiva), a village panchayat president who’s simply trying to get a wedding done without the whole place turning into a battlefield.

Director Nithish Sahadev, making his Tamil debut after the Malayalam hit Falimy, first imagined this story in his own state. I’m glad he shifted it here. Tamil cinema has no shortage of rural political dramas, usually full of grand speeches and slow-motion dust storms.
Sahadev goes the other way. He brings everything down to bruised pride, awkward obligations, and the chaos of feeding guests on time. Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu called it "precisely the kind of grounded dramedy that Tamil cinema fans who watch Malayalam films have yearned for".
That feels right. The film is messy in the right ways. It breathes like a place people actually live in.
"A chaotic yet warm rural comedy that wins on heart, humor, and Jiiva’s performance despite a familiar story and a shaky second half."
The film is widely seen as a fun, feel-good village entertainer with fast-paced situational comedy, relatable family conflicts, and a clear social message about ego and rumours. Jiiva’s turn as the panchayat leader is praised for sharp comic timing and grounded emotion, and the large ensemble is credited with keeping the chaos engaging rather than tiring. Some viewers, however, feel the narrative loses focus later on, with extra subplots, underdeveloped character arcs, latestnetflix.com contends, and a rushed resolution that softens the emotional impact.

Mani wants the procession for his father Chellappa at 10:30 a.m. Next door, Ilavarasu's daughter Sowmya has her muhurtham at the same minute. Between them sits Jeeva Rathinam, the panchayat president, a man who cannot lose either house's votes. The Hindu's Bhuvanesh Chandar laid that clock out on Pongal. Thambi Ramaiah plays Mani. Prathana Nathan plays Sowmya. Jiiva plays Jeeva. Netflix later boiled the same knot to feuding families, missing brides, latestnetflix.com contends, and a wedding and a funeral on one day. ,
The movie did not have a public name for most of the shoot. The Hindu reported that Jiiva 45 went on floors with a pooja on May 9, 2025. Malayalam director Nithish Sahadev, coming off Falimy, was writing with Sanjo Joseph. He told Instagram readers he would start a Mammootty film only after this one. Cinema Express said cameras wrapped in July. The title Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil arrived on Ayudha Pooja, October 1, with a first-look of Jiiva held in a festive crowd. Kannan Ravi produces. Deepak Ravi is co-producer. Vishnu Vijay scores. Bablu Aju shoots. Arjune Babu cuts. TMDB lists Nithish as director and writer, Anuraj OB as writer, and a U-certificate comedy-drama dated January 15, 2026. The Hindu's review card ran 115 minutes. ,

Chandar called it Nithish's "extremely satisfying Tamil debut" and "the kind of grounded dramedy that Tamil cinema fans who watch Malayalam films have yearned for." Janani K at India Today gave it 3 out of 5 and called it an earnest village satire about ego, with comedy that "never crosses its limits." Cinema Express's review stressed the political tightrope. Jeevarathinam, it wrote, tries not to lose a single vote while playing pacifier for both households. , ,
Koimoi's closing report, citing Sacnilk, put India net at 30.13 crore against a reported 10 crore budget. India gross 35.55 crore. Overseas 3.2 crore. Worldwide 38.75 crore. The desk labeled it a super hit at 201 percent returns, and Jiiva's highest-grossing lead title since the pandemic, behind only 83 on his overall list. Treat that ROI math as the trade's arithmetic, not a studio leak. Economic Times said Netflix India South posted the February 12 date on X, with Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada tracks, four weeks after the theatrical bow. The Netflix page still lists Jiiva, Thambi Ramaiah, and Ilavarasu. The official trailer went up in January. No reporter printed what Netflix paid. ,
