The Garden of Forking Paths: How Adam by Eve Turns a Myth Into a Mood

I didn’t expect to cry during an animated music video. Then again, I didn’t expect Adam by Eve: A Live in Animation to feel like a fever dream I’d had myself—one where the edges of memory blur into something half-remembered, half-invented, and entirely inescapable. The film (if we can even call it that) is 58 minutes of visual and sonic collage, stitching together live-action sequences, 2D animation, and the haunting discography of Japanese artist Eve into a loose retelling of Adam and Eve’s fall.

But the biblical framing is just that: a frame. What’s inside is something far more personal—a story about loss, longing, and the way we rewrite our own pasts to survive them.

Aki stands in a surreal, monochrome landscape, her shadow stretching unnaturally long behind her as a looming, one-eyed figure watches from the distance.

The film follows two girls, Aki and Taki, whose friendship (or something more—more on that later) is disrupted when Taki vanishes without explanation. The narrative unfolds in fragments: a train ride through a city that looks like it’s melting, a school hallway that stretches into infinity, a forest where the trees have faces. Eve’s music—moody, electronic, and drenched in reverb—acts as the connective tissue, each song a new layer of the story.

The animation style shifts constantly, from the hyper-detailed 2D work of Studio Khara (the team behind Evangelion) to rough, sketch-like sequences that feel like they were scribbled in the margins of a notebook. It’s disorienting, but intentionally so. This isn’t a film that wants you to get comfortable.

What’s striking is how little it explains. There’s no exposition, no clear timeline, no traditional character arcs. Instead, Adam by Eve operates like a dream you’re trying to piece together the morning after.

The one-eyed monster that stalks Aki—is it a metaphor for grief? Conformity? The weight of expectation?

The film never says, and that ambiguity is its greatest strength. (It’s also, I suspect, why some viewers bounce off it entirely. If you need your stories to hold your hand, this one will leave you groping in the dark.)

Audience Opinions

Audience 6.0/10
"A visually inventive musical animation with a unique premise, but its short runtime and uneven execution leave audiences wanting more depth."

Viewers appreciate the film’s bold animation style and musical elements, which blend live-action and animated sequences in an experimental way. However, the 58-minute runtime feels too brief to fully explore its themes, and the story’s emotional impact is often overshadowed by its abstract presentation. latestnetflix.com's view is that Some find the concept intriguing but struggle with its lack of narrative clarity.

What viewers praise
  • Innovative animation The mix of live-action and animation creates a striking visual experience that stands out.
  • Musical appeal The soundtrack and musical numbers add energy and creativity to the film.
  • Unique concept The premise of a live concert turned animated story is fresh and experimental.
Common complaints
  • Short runtime At just under an hour, the film feels rushed and underdeveloped.
  • Lack of depth The story’s emotional and thematic layers are thin, leaving some viewers unsatisfied.
  • Uneven execution The abstract style can be confusing, making it hard to connect with the characters or plot.

Aki goes for a drink. She does not come back.

The official film site opens in a family restaurant. High schooler Aki sits with her friend Taki. Taki describes a dream about being attacked by Hitotsume, then stands up for the drink bar and never returns. Aki wanders Tokyo. Other people start reporting the same one-eyed figure in their sleep. The site says she follows Taki's voice into a fake Shibuya that is neither dream nor reality. Polygon's Kambole Campbell, writing on premiere day, named Hanon as Aki and singer-model Ano as Taki. latestnetflix.com's read is that hitotsume, he wrote, already lived in Eve's manga Kara no Kioku and in the music videos.Netflix's U.S. page bills Eve, Hanon, and Ano. TMDB dates the 58-minute, R-rated U.S. file March 15, 2022. , ,

Eve's official news post on January 25, 2022 called it his first theatrical work. World Netflix drop the same day as a one-week run at TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro and other Japanese theaters. The Japanese note said the film started after two years without live shows, when he asked whether he could deliver something that was not a concert. Animation, live footage, CG, and a story. The post closed by saying next time they should meet at a live show. That is a paraphrase of the Japanese statement, not an invented English interview.

Khara took Mob. Waboku took boredom.

Anime News Network, working off Netflix's anime YouTube and Comic Natalie, listed the desks. Nobutaka Yoda directed, wrote, and edited. Genki Kawamura, the Your Name and Weathering With You producer, is credited for planning. Studio Khara, the Evangelion Rebuild shop, animated the new song "Boto" (Mob) under Hibiki Yoshizaki. Waboku, who had already directed Eve's "Okinimesumama" and "Tokyo Ghetto" videos, handled the new track "Taikutsu o Saien Shinaide." Visual-effects group khaki and animator Yuichiro Saeki took "Kaikai Kitan," the first Jujutsu Kaisen opening. Khara's own site confirmed the Mob credit on January 25, 2022. Polygon noted that old songs with existing videos, like "Heart Forecast," get restaged inside Aki's memories, with the original clip playing on a screen in the background. , ,
