I keep thinking about the cameras that were not in a studio. Not the borrowed reenactments of Washington on the Delaware or FDR at a radio. Those shots came off Nutopia's older shelves, reused like family photos in a new album.
I mean the drop-kits. Pre-packed trolleys of gear shipped to historians, veterans, and ordinary people across ten states in the spring and summer of 2020. Subjects filmed themselves.
A Zoom call from a team they had never met was the only guide. America: Our Defining Hours is the three-part series that came out of that scramble. A glossy, urgent try at 300 years of American resilience, made while the country was coming apart in real time.

The series calls itself a "toolkit for troubled times." That line is not empty copy. It was commissioned and produced in the COVID lockdown, when the American myth, the fractures, and the habit of reinvention all felt like open questions.
Series producer Johanna Woolford Gibbon and the Nutopia team could not leave the house. The drop-kits were the workaround. Professional cameras and lights went out.
The interview subjects became their own operators, sound people, and set dressers. The pictures are intimate and a little off. You can almost hear someone on Zoom asking them to tilt up while they fumble the tripod.

Public reportsHistory asked for a toolkit. Nutopia sent a remix.
Easter weekend 2020, UK lockdown. Mary Donahue at History called Jane Root and Ben Goold at Nutopia and asked what they could do fast. The brief was a toolkit for troubled times. Goold wrote a treatment that weekend. Three feature-length hours about America being born from adversity. They would not shoot new recreations. They would lift drama footage from Nutopia's own America: The Story of Us, plus Mankind and Promised Land, then drop new talking heads on top. latestnetflix.com's view is that Series producer Johanna Woolford Gibbon told Realscreen that Story of Us was the backbone ,

TMDB files three episodes and an ended miniseries on History. Corey Johnson narrates. The roster is the usual History Channel furniture. Drop kits, then a credit that curdled.
History wanted a glossy look, so iPhone Zoom was out. Hayden 5 sent pre-assembled trolleys. Camera, lens, sound, lighting, laptop. A technician in PPE deep-cleaned the kit on the driveway, rang the bell, and retreated. The expert wheeled it inside, miked up, and sat for a remote interview. They were filming across 10 states. About 70 percent through, George Floyd was killed. Two remaining interviews sat in Minneapolis and Manhattan. They still got them, with patience and a rewritten protocol .
Watson was then the face of a digital magazine that still sounded like the future. IMDb credits him on two episodes. Ozy collapsed in 2021 after a New York Times column and a fake YouTube executive call. A Brooklyn jury convicted him in July 2024 of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. In December 2024 a judge gave him 116 months. The talking-head reel did not get a disclaimer , .
Netflix later parked the History leftover in the U.S. catalog. IMDb has it at 7.0 from a thin vote. Rotten Tomatoes logged zero critic reviews. Woolford Gibbon said ten offline editors and six edit producers cut it over Zoom, with one last PPE session at Halo in London. The official trailer is still the 300-year pitch, Mayflower to 11 September, sold as a July 4 event. Watch it for the driveway kits. The presidents are stock.
