Karaoke night without the knives

I'll admit it. I was not expecting to care. A karaoke contest on Netflix. Sitting alone in a dim room at 2 a.m., thumb still moving through the pile, Sing On! Spain should have been easy to skip. I stayed. Not for the €30,000. For the relief of watching people sing off-key and not get hunted for it.

A contestant mid-song, eyes closed, hands gripping the microphone like it's the only thing keeping them upright

Six strangers, a stage, a catalog of pop hits. Each episode they belt in front of a live crowd while a machine scores pitch, rhythm, and timing. No judges, and no manufactured feuds.

People singing, often badly, always trying. Most competition shows want gladiators. This one lets them be awkward and still keep the microphone.

Episode three stuck. José, a middle-aged flight attendant, goes at Despacito. He is not a great singer.

The voice cracks. The timing slips. He still throws himself at the song with a grin so unguarded the room erupts.

The camera holds his face after, sweaty, delighted, and for a second it is not a contest. It is a man who loves music, standing in a spotlight, being seen. The songs work like shorthand.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Ricky said Spain opened the karaoke door. Pinewood had already booked three versions.

On premiere morning, Ricky Merino told La Vanguardia that Sing On! Spain, the show Netflix sells in Spanish as !A cantar!, was the platform's first musical program worldwide and that Spain had been picked to lead. He liked the industrial flex. The UK format shop Hello Dolly had a colder ledger. Executive producers Victoria Ashbourne and Stuart Shawcross told Variety they shot the Spanish, German, and U.S. latestnetflix.com's take is that editions back to back in three weeks, then staggered the drops from July.TMDB lists the Spanish series as eight episodes dated 24 July 2020, original title !A cantar!, host Ricky Merino as himself. , ,

The OT chat host got a mask and a meter.

Vertele covered Netflix Spain's 30 January 2020 press day. Seven local originals went on the table. The one that turned heads was a karaoke contest with Merino, the Operacion Triunfo 2017 contestant who had already been parked on El Chat de OT. Netflix's own pitch was six people from mixed jobs singing known hits for a jackpot of up to 30,000 euros. FormulaTV named DLO Producciones and Hello Dolly as the producers and reminded readers Merino had been the second contestant voted off OT 2017. He told La Vanguardia the offer gave him respect and a little vertigo because the format was exclusive to Netflix and could be seen in 190 countries. He also refused the talent-show label. People came to win money by staying in tune, like a karaoke party with a bank. , ,

The machine was the real star. Shawcross said Ionoco fused a ten-year-old algorithm with a game engine. Musicologists traced every note of the original vocal. The analyzer takes a reading every 46 milliseconds. Contestants were not fully briefed until they hit the studio. They had to stand over floor grates so each singer heard the live band at the same instant. Decider walked the Spanish rules on launch day. A round's pot is 5,000 or 10,000 euros, filled by how close the group stays to the record. The top scorer cannot be voted off. The rest vote someone upstairs to keep partying. Later rounds drop the vote and trust the graphic. Merino can toss a 500 euro bonus. A golden-note stunt can add 1,000 euros each. Joel Keller thought the meter favored male voices and that voting was a mess, even if the two best singers still reached the end. The jackpot can hit 30,000 euros. He wrote that it more often settles near 20,000. ,

Spanish Wikipedia dumps the themed hours that all landed the same day. Fiesta en la arena, Numeros 1, Directo al corazon, Sabor latino, Canciones de pelicula, Los ochenta, Pop Rock, Divas. Episode one opens with Merino on the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," which Decider also clocked as the walk-on. Wikipedia says MTV Spain started airing the run in the first week of September 2020. There was no second season. Ready Steady Cut later used the Germany drop to repeat its Spain verdict. Karaoke is best left in the bars. Netflix Espana still has the official trailer on YouTube if you want the lights without the lower-third. , , ,
