Six episodes and a key that overpromises

I have not watched New Key. English-language coverage of this 2021 Japanese variety series is a logline, one production still, and a TMDB page with a single 8.0 vote. That score is a shrug with extra decimal places.

The Japanese title is Atarashii Kagi. Popular comedy groups, the logline says, come together to create "new punchlines, music, games, and other location-based projects." Six episodes.

The names attached are Shōhei Osada, Shun Matsuo, Soshina, and others I do not recognize. I am not going to invent a screening I did not sit through.

What I can talk about is the tradition sitting behind the pitch. Japanese variety TV, at least the version that leaks west, lives in the blur. Gaki no Tsukai. Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai. Scripted until it is not.

Comedians needling each other with the ease of a family fight. Manzai, the two-person stand-up form, runs on the boke and the tsukkomi. Fool and straight man.

One rhythm. New Key looks, from the still we have, like someone put more than two people in the same space and asked them to make a thing. Faces locked in concentration. Other faces about to break.

If the photograph is honest, nobody in that room is safe from anybody else.

A group of comedians mid-performance, their expressions a mix of concentration and barely contained laughter

Audience Opinions

"A niche comedy-reality series with a cult following but minimal widespread discussion."

Viewer feedback on *New Key* (2021) is sparse, but those who engaged with the series highlight its quirky humor and unscripted charm. The cast’s dynamic, particularly the chemistry among leads, is noted as a standout feature. latestnetflix.com's view is that however, the show’s reality-comedy hybrid format and niche appeal limit its broader recognition or in-depth critique.

What viewers praise
  • Quirky humor The series’ offbeat comedy style resonates with fans of unconventional, unscripted entertainment.
  • Strong cast chemistry The interactions among the main cast, including Shōhei Osada and Shun Matsuo, are frequently praised for their authenticity and energy.
Common complaints
  • Limited appeal The reality-comedy format and niche premise may not resonate with viewers outside its target audience.
  • Minimal discussion The series lacks widespread viewer engagement or detailed critiques, making it difficult to gauge broader reception.

Public reports

Fuji put them in the Saturday 8pm hour that used to flatten studio sets.

New Key, Atarashii Kagi on the Japanese card, moved into Fuji Television's Saturday 8 o'clock slot on October 16, 2021. That hour once carried Ore-tachi Hyokinzoku, Uchan Nanchan's Yaru nara Yaraneba!, and Mecha Ike. The new tenants were three Yoshimoto acts in their first prime-time hosting jobs. Seiya and Soshina of Shimofuri Myojo, Shohei Osada and Shun Matsuo of Chocolate Planet, Hiroki Akiyama, Dai Okabe, and Ryudai Kikuta of Hanako. The title is the pitch. latestnetflix.com's take is that they were meant to be the new key people in comedy and in television.,

The January 3, 2021 pilot trended on Twitter. Fuji made it a Friday 8pm series from April 23. Hanako missed that first tape. Wikipedia, citing the period coverage, says the trio was isolating with COVID, credited in the opening titles and absent from every sketch. Director Yosuke Kizuki opened the golden hour with a collapsing food stall, a Kimura Takuya Kyojou parody, and Matsuo's flying pretty-boy bit. Household ratings sat near 4 percent. Osada later said the numbers were tough, that nobody knew what to do, and that staff and talent were on edge. , ,

A writer told them to steal a school.

Takeshi Takemura suggested hide-and-seek on campus. On November 12, 2022, the seven of them took over a school, hid inside the art department's budget, and dared the student body to find them before time ran out. After the January 14, 2023 second hunt, the 13-to-49 core, the teen slice, and the kids slice all sat first. Applications on the show site passed 15,000. Mynavi later counted more than 50 cameras on a typical day, a week of cable maps, and hiding boxes that never quite fit Seiya. Osada fronts the gag as the New Japan Hide-and-Seek Association. A December 2023 recap of those hunts won that month's Galaxy Award. ,

Then they exported the campus.

In July 2024 the same three groups hosted FNS 27-Hour Television as Japan's most fun school festival. A Seiya-alma-mater hunt that aired July 27, 2024, took silver at Germany's World Media Festival in the children-and-youth open class, Fuji's first prize there. At MIPCOM 2025 the network optioned the format to Fremantle as Vs School the Ultimate Hide and Seek for Denmark. On April 25, 2026, the night NiziU hid at Osada's old school in Kyoto, Netflix started the series at home and then abroad. Chief producer Hiroaki Yazaki called the Netflix window an honor after years of chasing one more viewer. The official YouTube still sells the campus hour. The Friday sketches are not what the streamer led with. , , ,
