Rain keeps the past on the clock

I like a story that treats time as a live wire, not a ruler. Dearest, Saiai in Japanese, understands that without a lecture. A murder case pulls Rio Sanada back toward Daiki Miyazaki, her first love, now a detective. What happens when the person you became collides with the person you were.

The crime is the door. After that, the series cares less about who killed whom than about what the reunion costs.

The line the show repeats is "The truth disappears with love." Not a poster. A problem.

Dual timelines do the work. No grandstanding. No volume contest. 2006 sits in a golden haze.

Minami Tanaka plays young Rio, bright, determined, trapped by a small town, an absent father, and the job of being the "responsible one." 2021 is colder and sharper. Yuriko Yoshitaka's Rio is polished, controlled, a woman who buried the old life under professionalism. Kouhei Matsushita's Daiki walks back in and those layers start to peel.

What is left is not always pretty.

A dimly lit room where Rio Sanada sits across from Detective Miyazaki, their faces half-shadowed as if caught between past and present

The series will not romanticize either year. 2006 is not a souvenir. You watch a girl who cannot wait to leave. 2021 is not a victory lap for her success. The investigation forces her to look at the pieces she filed away.

The show is best when it lingers. Rio staring at her face in a train window. Daiki's fingers hovering short of her shoulder.

Behind the Scenes of Dearest (2021): The Japanese Thriller That Blurred Romance and Danger

Dearest (2021), the Japanese drama-thriller series directed by Ayuko Tsukahara, Takeyoshi Yamamoto, and Yoshiaki Murao, arrived with a tantalizing premise: a blend of romance, suspense, and high-stakes intrigue. Starring Yuriko Yoshitaka and Kouhei Matsushita in lead roles, the series promised a gripping narrative, but details about its production and reception have remained surprisingly scarce. latestnetflix.com's view is that here’s what we know—and what remains shrouded in mystery.

A Star-Studded Cast, But Little Buzz

The series boasts a formidable ensemble, including Arata Iura, Mitsuhiro Oikawa, and Hiroko Yakushimaru, actors with decades of experience in Japanese film and television. Yet, despite the talent involved, Dearest hasn’t generated the same level of chatter as other high-profile J-dramas. Its rating on SensCritique sits at a modest 6.3/10 based on 14 votes , suggesting a niche appeal rather than a breakout hit.

Yuriko Yoshitaka, known for her roles in The Naked Director and Alice in Borderland, plays a central character in Dearest, though specifics about her role remain vague. Kouhei Matsushita, her co-star, has a similarly low-key presence in the series’ promotional material, with no standout interviews or behind-the-scenes revelations surfacing online. The lack of press coverage is unusual for a project of this scale, leaving fans to speculate whether the series was underpromoted or simply flew under the radar.

Genre-Blending Ambitions

Dearest is classified as a thriller, drama, and romance , a combination that should, in theory, attract a broad audience. However, the SERP results hint at confusion over its tone. One trailer leans into the romantic angle, while other videos—like a recap titled "The Rarest Blood On Earth Made Her The Most Dangerous Assassin In Bangkok" —suggest a darker, more action-driven narrative. This discrepancy raises questions: Was Dearest marketed inconsistently, or did its story take unexpected turns?

The SensCritique listing confirms the series’ original title as Saiai (最愛), which translates to "dearest" or "beloved," reinforcing the romantic core . Yet the thriller elements appear to dominate in fan discussions, particularly in videos analyzing the ending . Without official episode breakdowns or creator interviews, it’s unclear whether the genre-blending was intentional or a misfire.

Production Mysteries and Unanswered Questions

One of the biggest unanswered questions about Dearest is its production timeline. The series premiered in 2021, but there’s no record of a traditional press tour, cast interviews, or behind-the-scenes featurettes. Even the episode count remains unverified—most Japanese dramas run for 10–12 episodes, but Dearest’s runtime is listed simply as 45 minutes per installment , leaving room for speculation.

Rumors (unconfirmed) suggest the series may have been produced under tight budget constraints, which could explain the lack of promotional material. Alternatively, it’s possible the show was overshadowed by bigger releases in 2021, such as Tokyo Revengers or The Naked Director’s second season. Without official statements, however, these remain theories.

Where to Watch and Why It Matters

For viewers curious about Dearest, the series’ availability is another point of confusion. While some trailers and recaps appear on YouTube , there’s no clear indication of a streaming home. Netflix has a similarly titled My Dearest Assassin , but this is a separate project—likely a Thai series—based on the description. The TMDB listing for Dearest (2021) [TMDB link] doesn’t provide streaming links, leaving international fans in the dark.

Despite its obscurity, Dearest represents an intriguing experiment in genre fusion. If the series ever gets a second life—through streaming re-releases or word-of-mouth buzz—it could find an audience among fans of slow-burn thrillers with romantic undertones. For now, though, it remains a footnote in 2021’s J-drama landscape.
