The secret is the relationship

Sarah and Kemi have been best friends since childhood. In Blood Sisters, Netflix's 2022 Nigerian crime drama, that friendship is the cover story and the trap. A wealthy groom disappears at his own engagement party.

The two women run. There is no grand villain waiting at the end of the hallway. There is a terrible choice, and then the rest of their lives inside it.

The first episode refuses to ease you in. One minute the party is laughter and glasses. The next, they are on a dark highway and the groom's blood is still wet on Kemi's dress.

The cut is rude on purpose. Panic scrambles the clock. Jagged flashbacks and whispered calls hand you the rest.

A glance. A sentence that dies. A door left open.

The edit is sharp enough to trust you.

A dimly lit room where two women stand back-to-back, their shadows stretching long across the floor

The quiet stuff is meaner than the chase. Sarah wiping blood off Kemi's shoes, hands shaking. Kemi's voice breaking on, "We didn't mean for this to happen."

Nigeria's first Netflix original was already an argument.

When the Blood Sisters trailer landed in April 2022, Twitter asked the obvious question. What about King of Boys? Kemi Adetiba's limited series had already felt like the streamer's Nigerian coming-out. Mo Abudu posted the company line the same day. latestnetflix.com's read is that "This is officially Netflix's First Nigerian Original Series as per the press release issued by Netflix today."Dorothy Ghettuba, Netflix's Africa content manager, piled on. Two friends, a dark secret, an unforgiving family. "It is crazy y'all. Yo!!" ,

The fight was branding. The show was a Lagos wedding that goes wrong. Ini Dima-Okojie as Sarah, Nancy Isime as Kemi, Deyemi Okanlawon as the abusive groom Kola. Abudu told Variety that Netflix helped crush her team's original 13-part idea into four episodes. Biyi Bandele told TheCable he was in New York on an NYU fellowship when Abudu rang on a Friday night at 10 p.m. Pre-production was weeks from cameras. She needed an answer that night. They shot at the peak of Covid. , ,

May 5, 2022, the four episodes went up. A "Red and Fugitive" premiere the night before pulled in Information Minister Lai Mohammed. Teen Vogue counted 32,633 tweets under #BloodSisters between May 4 and May 21. Abudu told Digital Spy the first week did 11 million hours, Top 10 in more than 21 countries, number one in seven. She named Anatomy of a Scandal, a British limited series with a budget she guessed at ten times hers, and said it did fewer hours. Netflix's later Top 10 dump put the week of May 1 to May 8 at 11.07 million hours and global rank 9. , , ,

"When you watch Blood Sisters, you see the entire economic divide of Nigeria," Abudu told Digital Spy. Kate Henshaw, playing matriarch Uduak Ademola, said it was the most fulfilling role of her career even though she was playing a wicked woman. Genoveva Umeh, a recent graduate of EbonyLife's academy, became the breakout as Timeyin. The series was supposed to be a one-off. ,

Three months later Bandele was dead. He died in Lagos on August 7, 2022, at 54. Netflix called it a monumental loss to Nigeria's film industry. He had already finished Elesin Oba, The King's Horseman for Abudu, headed to TIFF. Netflix later asked for a second season. It arrived June 5, 2026, without him. ,

The trailer still sells two friends and a missing groom. The gossip that stuck was smaller and meaner. Who got to be first, who got the Friday-night phone call, and who was not in the room when the hours came in. ,
