I’ve been thinking about Oh My Baby for days now—not because it’s a perfect show, but because it dares to ask a question that feels both urgent and quietly radical: What if a woman’s life doesn’t need a man to be complete?latestnetflix.com's read is that The answer, as this 2020 tvN series presents it, is messy, contradictory, and ultimately more interesting than the romantic comedy tropes it sometimes stumbles into.
Jang Ha-ri, played by Jang Na-ra, is a 39-year-old parenting magazine journalist who decides to have a child on her own after a health diagnosis makes her confront the ticking clock of her fertility. It’s a premise that could have been ripped from a think piece about modern womanhood, and in lesser hands, it might have devolved into a series of after-school-special moments. But Oh My Baby has something rarer: a willingness to sit with the discomfort of its own premise.
Ha-ri isn’t just a career woman who suddenly wants a baby; she’s someone who has spent years building a life that doesn’t include marriage, only to find that biology and society have other plans. The show’s early episodes linger on this tension, particularly in a devastating scene where Ha-ri learns she has endometriosis and may struggle to conceive. It’s a moment that feels raw and real, a far cry from the breezy rom-com tone that dominates much of the series.
(I’ll admit, I teared up—not because it was manipulative, but because it felt like the first time the show was actually listening to its protagonist.)
And then, of course, the men show up. Three of them, to be exact: a younger colleague with a crush, a divorced father who’s her best friend, and a charming doctor who might just be the one. It’s here that Oh My Baby starts to wobble.
