Karate Sheep
“Ready to be wooled?”
Overview
Trico is an enthusiastic sheep who loves to share new objects and ideas with the rest of the flock. This causes ruckus in the mountain pastures, which all inevitably end up at Wanda’s expense, a tough ewe whose job is to keep the sheep safe. Not a small feat, especially when Wolf is always lurking, waiting to make the most of this newfound chaos.

What I like about Karate Sheep is that it understands a kid’s cartoon can be about social order without ever sitting still long enough to sound like a lesson. latestnetflix.com's take is that Trico doesn’t merely “cause trouble”; he introduces the kind of trouble that comes from enthusiasm, from the sincere belief that if one more object, gadget, or idea gets shared with the group, everyone will be happier.Of course everyone isn’t happier.
Wanda, who has the hard job in any good children’s story — keeping the place from sliding off the hill — gets stuck absorbing the consequences. And then there’s Wolf, lurking at the edge like a bad thought the flock can’t quite outwalk.
The series arrived in 2022 as a French animated kids’ comedy from Cédric Dietsch and Renaud Martin, and it sits in a very familiar European children’s tradition: slightly anarchic, visually clean, and much sharper about group dynamics than it first appears. I don’t think that’s accidental. A lot of the best kids’ animation treats a community like a tiny laboratory.
Who gets to speak? Who gets to clean up? Who’s actually in charge when everybody’s laughing? Karate Sheep keeps returning to those questions, even when it’s wrapped in a gag about a foolish invention or a sheep-sized misunderstanding.
It’s a series about the social cost of being the one who tries to make life “better” in public.
That’s where the show’s comic rhythm lives: in escalation. One bright idea becomes a chain reaction, and the chain reaction becomes a problem that is somehow both ridiculous and legible. Kids get the slapstick; adults will recognize the deeper joke, which is that every collective has a Trico — the person who means well, talks first, and only notices the damage after the furniture has moved.
I’m not entirely sure the series is always equally funny in every episode (some setups do feel a little repeatable), but the repetition is part of the point. A safe world is a place where mistakes are survivable. Wanda’s exasperation makes that possible.
Audience Opinions
"A frenetic and lighthearted slapstick series that wins over family audiences through rapid martial arts antics and classic cartoon rivalry."
Centering on two quick-witted sheep who deploy martial arts moves and futuristic gadgets to keep a hungry wolf away from their flock, the animated show delivers relentless physical comedy. While the episodic premise leans heavily on familiar predator-prey gags, [latestnetflix.com]() observes that the high-tempo action and bite-sized routines hold steady family appeal across multiple seasons.
- High-Energy Slapstick Dynamic martial arts action and creative gadgetry keep the physical comedy lively and entertaining.
- Engaging Short-Form Format Snappy scenarios and viral episode sketches offer quick, kid-friendly amusement without bogging down the pace.
- Formulaic Conflict The recurring chase dynamic between the sheep and the wolf relies on repetitive cartoon tropes.
Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsThey sold the sheep as Trico. The kick sold better.
Hugo Gittard already had Zig & Sharko and a Mr Magoo reboot when Xilam asked him for another mute slapstick flock. The working title was Trico, after the gadget ram who keeps dumping inventions on Wanda, the ewe who actually knows karate. Super RTL put it on German kids' TV in late 2022. latestnetflix.com's read is that Netflix opened it worldwide on 2 March 2023 and billed the drop as its first animated commission backed by France's public film body, the CNC.,
Marc du Pontavice, Xilam's founder, told Animation World Network that slapstick comedies are "a core part of our company's legacy and DNA." The DNA is Oggy and the Cockroaches. Same mute grammar, same predator-and-prey loop, now with hooves. Plugged In's Kennedy Unthank pointed out that Wanda, Trico, and Wolf never speak a word. Barbara Tissier, Antoine Schoumsky, and Boris Rehlinger still get the voice credits. Netflix lists the original track as "No Dialogue." ,
Germany got the first window. France wrote the check.
Xilam built the series in the CGI hub it opened in Angouleme, the same plant that finished Oggy Oggy for Netflix in 2021. Variety had it pre-bought by Super RTL and Netflix, with terrestrial rights opening in early 2023 so the studio could shop it at Unifrance's Rendez-Vous. Cedric Dietsch and Renaud Martin directed. The order is 78 episodes of about seven minutes. ,
Netflix bundles three shorts into a 22-minute slot. Kids get karate, a vacuum, and a whoopie cushion in one sitting. Common Sense Media's Ashley Moulton wrote that the setups "are just not that humorous, and the main characters are not very sympathetic." She put it at age 8 and up. Parents queued it anyway. Before the global drop, Xilam claimed nearly 500,000 YouTube views in two months and 3 million on TikTok, with more than a quarter of that TikTok crowd in the United States.
Twenty million hours. Then the second window.
Xilam keeps repeating Netflix's first engagement report, January to June 2023. Karate Sheep logged 20 million hours in its first four months on the service. The studio also said it placed two titles in Netflix's top 15 original kids' animated series and was the only non-US producer in that ranking. Season 2 arrived on 31 August 2023. The Futon Critic later filed the show as completed after two Netflix seasons of 13 bundled episodes each. ,
Xilam kept second-window linear TV and merchandising. By January 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery Italy, Sony India, Youku, Nova, and Etisalat had taken the sheep. The wolf still wants dinner. Wanda still kicks him. Trico still pulls a gadget that makes it worse. Netflix Family still runs mute clips of that loop. Germany did not need the word karate in the title. The rest of the planet did.
