5 min readThe Girl Who Wouldn’t Shrink
I keep thinking about the way Mich—curvy, curly, confident Mich—walks down the hallway of her Xochimilco high school like she’s already the main character of her own life. It’s a small act of rebellion, really, the kind that doesn’t announce itself with a manifesto or a viral hashtag. She doesn’t slouch.
She doesn’t apologize for taking up space. She just is, and that, in a world that keeps trying to edit her down to size, is enough to set the whole story in motion.
The Most Beautiful Flower (2022), a the episode count Netflix comedy from Mexican creator Fernanda Eguiarte, is a series that understands something fundamental about adolescence: the cruelty isn’t always in the big, dramatic betrayals. Sometimes it’s in the way a teacher mispronounces your name for the third time in a week, or the way a group of girls at the next table over laugh just a little too loudly when you walk by.
Eguiarte, whose previous work I’m not familiar with (a gap in my own viewing I’ll need to rectify), has crafted a story that feels both intimately specific to its setting and universally recognizable. This is a show about the quiet violence of being told, in a thousand tiny ways, that you don’t belong—and the even quieter defiance of insisting that you do.

The series’ greatest strength is its refusal to turn Mich’s journey into a simplistic underdog narrative. There’s no grand makeover montage, no sudden popularity coup where the mean girls see the error of their ways. Instead, The Most Beautiful Flower lingers in the messy, everyday moments of self-doubt and small triumphs.
In one particularly sharp episode, Mich joins the school’s debate team, not because she’s particularly interested in public speaking, but because she’s tired of being the girl who’s only noticed when she’s the butt of a joke. The scene where she delivers her first argument—her voice shaking, her hands gripping the podium like it’s the only thing keeping her upright—isn’t played for laughs.
Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsShe lost the real flower contest in 2005. Netflix bought the loss.
Mexican comedian Michelle Rodriguez entered Xochimilco's La flor mas bella del ejido in 2005 and did not win. Univision put that on the record when Netflix premiered The Most Beautiful Flower on 7 December 2022. Ten episodes, about half an hour each. Esmeralda Soto plays teenage Mich. Rodriguez created the series with Fernanda Eguiarte Hernandez. Salvador Espinosa directed with her. latestnetflix.com's view is that Jaime Davila, Diana Mejia-Jones, and Wendy Cortez executive produced.,
The English trailer has Mich introducing herself. "I'm Mich. I'm fabulous. I'm popular. Okay, I'm not all that yet. But I'm about to make it." Her friends tell her she is not a blue-eyed warrior and not a size zero. Then a new student named Majo shows up and Mich yells about a love octagon. Collider ran that clip in November 2022. The official Netflix trailer on YouTube is the same pitch in Spanish, plus a crack about "whitexican" territory at school. ,
Xochimilco first, then the love octagon.
Rodriguez told POPSUGAR the lead is a curvy, brunette Mexican girl who likes folkloric tradition and already thinks she is fabulous. "Representing so many, it's the best revolution," she said. The show is loosely her adolescence in Xochimilco, the canal neighborhood in Mexico City. Davila said Netflix asked Campanario for a YA series set in Mexico, and Diana Mejia-Jones pointed at the comedian because she made them laugh. He told the magazine that the Mexico they shot is the one he knows, not the drug-war loop on American news. Colorism is in the plot on purpose. Mich's cousin Brenda is lighter, popular, and cruel at school. The drama teacher wants a slender Disney Alice. Mich keeps auditioning as Alice of Xochimilco.
Hola later printed Rodriguez on Soto. The match was hair, smile, and stubbornness. Soto came in known from TikTok, not from a long telenovela resume. SensaCine said the series sat in Netflix's top 10 in Mexico next to Wednesday and the Harry and Meghan docuseries in its first week. That is the chart gossip teen comedies live on. It is also a reminder that the face of the show was a social-media native playing a girl who wants the school musical, the boyfriend who will not go public, and a pageant her creator already lost. ,
Rodriguez told POPSUGAR she rarely saw women like her on television, music, or theater. "The Most Beautiful Flower is the series that I would have liked to see as a child and adolescent," she said. Netflix left it as a one-season comedy. No second-season announcement followed the December drop. The real pageant still runs in Xochimilco. Rodriguez already had her loss on file. The series is the do-over, with a writers' room, a streaming slot, and a supporting cast that includes Isabel Yudice, Alicia Velez, Michelle Olvera, German Bracco, and Luis Fernando Pena. ,
