Meekah would rather look at a leaf

I sat down for a preschool show and waited for the sugar rush. Meekah never really delivers one. Cashae Monya plays Meekah. Her best friend is Blippi, already a fixture for toddlers.

They walk into gardens, recycling centers, construction sites. They point. They ask.

They wait for the answer. There is almost no plot in the adult sense. There is a lot of looking.

Meekah and Blippi kneel in a sunlit greenhouse, surrounded by lush green plants, their faces lit with curiosity as they examine a leaf

In the greenhouse they kneel in the dirt and turn a leaf over like it is news. The sun is hard. The plants are close.

Nobody is bouncing for the camera. That is the show at its best, two people taking a small thing seriously. There is no villain and no ticking clock.

Nobody manufactures a fight. The series is live-action, which matters. When Meekah picks up a rock to feel its texture, or Blippi crouches to watch ants on pavement, the camera stays.

No cutaway to a flashing graphic. No jolt of noise to yank a wandering gaze back. The editing is almost invisible.

Audience Opinions

Limited evidence
Audience 4.4/10
"A children's series with mixed reception, praised for its energy but criticized for lacking depth."

Feedback on *Meekah* is sparse and polarized. Its lively, fast-paced content works for younger kids, while others find it underwhelming or forgettable. Beyond the energetic moments, it struggles to hold attention.

What viewers praise
  • Energetic and fast-paced High energy that suits its target audience of young children.
Common complaints
  • Lacks depth Little substance, which makes it forgettable for older audiences.
  • Mixed reception The response is divided: enjoyable in short bursts but not compelling enough for sustained viewing.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Moonbug sold Netflix one Meekah. The costume later had two.

Hollywood Reporter got the exclusive on 16 November 2022. Moonbug Entertainment, then a Candle Media company after a $3 billion acquisition, would spin Blippi's best friend into her own Netflix series. Alex Weprin named Kaitlin Becker as the performer. Season 1 would debut 1 December in English, Spanish, and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Andy Yeatman, Moonbug's managing director of the Americas, supplied the internal number. "Meekah is our first addition to the Blippi universe and she has proven to be an instant hit with fans. In fact, we see a double-digit increase in viewers for episodes that feature Meekah."

Moonbug's own 16 November release piled product on top of the streamer date. Dance with Meekah, a 20-track album, was already on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. A YouTube channel launched that spring had 500,000 subscribers. Meekah-tagged clips, the company said, had been viewed more than 650 million times since October 2021. A Disguise Halloween costume and a Jazwares doll were slated for 2023. Olympian Shawn Johnson would appear in a movement series. Meekah would also take a starring role on Blippi: The Wonderful World Tour, with dates listed for Milwaukee, Charlotte, Nashville, Houston, and Louisville starting February 2023.

The character herself is older than the Netflix listing. PR Newswire, 9 October 2021, announced Meekah as Becker's part, "Blippi's cartwheel-loving and kind-hearted best friend who lives next door." Becker said, "Meekah spreads joy and curiosity wherever she goes." She added that she "couldn't have found a better best friend in Blippi," and that "We're all excited for more fans of the show to see themselves reflected in a program they love so much." Moonbug's Katelynn Heil, then general manager of Blippi, called Meekah "the perfect person to join him" on inclusive stories. Educational consultant Dr. Natascha Crandall was credited with shaping both characters' learning goals.

TMDB still files the Netflix show as tv/218583, TV-Y, 2022, with J. Kaitlin Becker, Cashae Monya, and Clayton Grimm. Netflix's public title page currently lists Kaitlin Becker, Cashae Meads, and Grimm. The Meads credit is how the streamer prints the second Meekah.,

The double happened in 2023. Parents magazine's later cast guide says Cashae Monya first put on the purple shirt that year and shares the role with Becker. Screen Rant described the assembly line. Some episodes split, Becker in one half and Monya in the other. Monya usually plays opposite Grimm's Blippi. Becker shares the frame with creator Stevin John. Two crews can shoot in different cities and still cut as one purple friend.,

Becker did not stay through that model. CafeMom, writing up her Flightless Bird podcast, says she left in 2024. She told the host there were "a lot of miscommunications" and "a lot of lies." "It was getting hard to show up to set and be this energetic positive character when I just got off of a frustrating phone call with a producer." On meeting the second Meekah before a contract was signed, she said they "look completely different." "When I first met her, before she signed a contract and they had her visit set, I was like 'What?'" CafeMom has her calling the height and skin-tone gap "five inches" and "very, very different," then asking, "Are we expecting families to just think that all Black girls look the same?" She said she would have turned down $1 million to renew. Those are her allegations on a podcast. The CafeMom piece does not include a Moonbug reply.

Netflix still offers the series. Moonbug sold Weprin a single face. Later hours of the same costume are a different actor, sometimes in the same episode. Families who only open the Netflix app were not mailed a recast memo.
