The Rainforest in the Living Room

I am very clearly not the intended audience for an 11-minute preschool cartoon about a talking glass frog. Still, when a show arrives carrying the biodiversity of an entire continent on its tiny, brightly colored back, it deserves a fair look. Koati, Netflix's 2025 series spun out of the 2021 movie, is trying to be a few things at once: an ecological fable, a celebration of Latin American culture, and, yes, a reliable bit of streaming infrastructure to occupy a kid while dinner is on the stove. latestnetflix.com's view is that the interesting question across all thirteen episodes is whether those goals can sit together without flattening each other.

The series, executive-produced by Sofía Vergara and created by Anabella Sosa-Dovarganes and Melissa de Assís Escobar, takes us back to the Land of Xo and its familiar quartet: Nachi the coati, Xochi the monarch butterfly, Pako the glass frog, and Xuxu the axolotl. The creators recently called it "a love song to Latin America" in PRODU, and that affection really is there if you look around the edges of the frame.

It's in the plants. It's in the decorative textures. It's in the background designs, which often feel more specific and cared for than this kind of preschool TV usually bothers to be.

But television—especially children's television—has a way of sanding down good intentions. Stretching a 90-minute movie world into tiny streaming episodes brings obvious growing pains, and the biggest one here is speed. The show barrels through its ideas.

Audience Opinions

Audience 6.1/10
"A colorful, bilingual rainforest romp with sweet values and catchy songs that is held back by flat, predictable storytelling."

Feedback so far is sparse but points to appealing 2D visuals, cute animal characters, and a gentle focus on friendship, kindness, and nature that works well for younger kids and bilingual families. At the same time, the simple, generic plots and slow, latestnetflix.com maintains, low-energy execution leave some adults bored and feeling that the show does not live up to its strong concept or voice cast.

What viewers praise
  • Vibrant 2D animation The hand-drawn look, colorful rainforest backdrops, and adorable creature designs are consistently praised as attractive and charming.
  • Bilingual Spanish-English blend The way Spanish and English are woven together feels natural and useful for families raising bilingual kids or introducing a second language.
  • Positive gentle themes Stories emphasize friendship, cooperation, emotional intelligence, and appreciation of nature in a soft, non-preachy way that works for preschoolers.
  • Latin American flavor Animals, settings, and music rooted in Latin America give the show a distinctive cultural identity that viewers looking for representation appreciate.
  • Catchy music and songs Short, upbeat songs about friendship and togetherness are easy for kids to sing along with and are often singled out as a highlight.
Common complaints
  • Generic storylines Plots follow very familiar preschool-tv patterns, with little tension or novelty, which makes episodes blend together for adults.
  • Dull pacing Despite the lively visuals, episodes can feel slow and uneventful, leading to comments that the show is dull and that the story goes nowhere.
  • Underused comedy talent High-profile comedic performers, including Sofía Vergara, are seen as constrained by safe, low-stakes material that gives them few standout moments.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Deadline had the pickup. ViX had already built the rainforest.

Katie Campione's exclusive landed on 22 October 2025. Sofia Vergara's 13-episode Koati, a ViX original from Upstairs Miami and Latin World Entertainment, would hit Netflix on 13 November in English and Spanish. The window named the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. ViX had started production in 2023. Netflix was arriving late, with the episodes already made.

Vergara told Deadline, "I have been working on this for over a decade." She wanted a kids show that celebrates Latin American nature, animals, family values, and music. She executive produces through LatinWE and voices Zaina. Cartoon Brew repeated the same lineup the next day. Anabella Sosa-Dovarganes is showrunner. Melissa de Assis Escobar writes with Federico Marcello. Sergio Slepczuk and Fernando Sawa directed. Julio Reyes-Copello of Magnus Studios produced the music. ,

Do not mix this up with the 2021 theatrical film, even though the shop is the same. Animation Magazine says the series is based on that feature. Rodrigo Perez-Castro directed the movie. Vergara, Karol G, Joe Manganiello, and Evaluna Montaner were in that cast. Wikipedia logs about $1.7 million at the box office. The series keeps Nachi the coati, Xochi the monarch butterfly, Pako the glass frog, and Xuxu the axolotl in the Land of XO. TMDB tags it as based on the movie and dates season 1 to 13 November 2025, all 13 episodes the same day. , ,

The English credits and the Spanish credits are not a glitch.

Deadline's Spanish-language names are Juan Pablo Monterrubio as Nachi, Habana Zoe Lopez as Xochi, Emilio Trevino as Pako, Andrea Valentina Cabrera as Xuxu, plus Adriana Barraza as Amaya and Sebas Villalobos as Calli. The official Koati site lists a different English-language group, including Caleb Ritch as Nachi. Parents matching Deadline's list to the shop page are seeing a bilingual dub, not a recast feud. ,

The site also puts Manolo Gonzalez Vergara in the voice company as Serafin and Andi. That is family-adjacent trivia, not a scandal. Official copy calls the show a gift from Latin America to families, and Vergara has said she has been on the project for more than ten years. Netflix files it TV-Y. The English trailer went up on YouTube in September 2025, weeks before Deadline's pickup story, which is how you can tell the episodes were finished before the streamer deal. , ,

The trade item worth keeping is the path. A TelevisaUnivision streamer paid for the rainforest, then Netflix took the territories that actually put those animals on US kids' home screens. Koati.com already talks about books, games, and language apps around the same characters. That is a brand plan, not a rumor of a second season. ,
