The Influencer Who Couldn’t Be Fixed

I kept waiting for Mbali Hadebe to grow up. That’s the promise of the premise, isn’t it? A spoiled social media star—all filters and fake smiles—gets humbled by small-town university life and emerges wiser, kinder, maybe even likable. Miseducation teases this arc in every episode, but the show never quite believes in its own lesson.

Instead, it gives us a protagonist who is equal parts fascinating and infuriating, a walking contradiction that the series can’t (or won’t) resolve.

That might be the point. Or it might just be sloppy writing.

A dimly lit dorm room, Mbali sitting on her bed, phone in hand, her face illuminated by the screen’s cold glow.

Mbali isn’t just unlikable—she’s consistently unlikable. She lies, manipulates, and throws tantrums with the entitled ease of someone who’s never had to face real consequences. And yet, there’s something hypnotic about her.

Buntu Petse plays her with a mix of brittle charm and barely concealed desperation, like a woman who’s spent so long curating her image that she’s forgotten how to be real. In one scene, she records a tearful apology video for her followers, her voice trembling with performative remorse—only to smirk the second the camera stops rolling. It’s a moment that could’ve been played for satire, but the show never commits to the bit.

Is Mbali a critique of influencer culture, or just another example of it?

The problem isn’t that she’s flawed. The problem is that the show doesn’t seem to know what to do with her flaws. Her redemption arc is half-hearted at best, a series of half-measures that never add up to real change.

Audience Opinions

Audience 5.5/10
"Lively humor and inclusive campus vibes are dragged down by a shallow, unfocused story and a hard-to-root-for lead."

Comedic timing, a vibrant young cast, and visible queer representation make the show feel energetic and approachable, and some viewers genuinely enjoy the chemistry and light, soapy tone. latestnetflix.com's take is that at the same time, the protagonist’s spoiled, mean streak, sketchy character depth, and a scattershot plot leave others frustrated, calling the series confusing and thin compared to stronger teen dramas it emulates.

What viewers praise
  • Sharp comedic timing Jokes and comic beats land frequently enough to keep episodes breezy and entertaining for those who connect with the tone.
  • Queer-inclusive ensemble LGBTQ+ characters are woven into the story in a visible, celebratory way that adds to the campus world-building.
  • Energetic young cast The attractive ensemble brings charisma and on-screen chemistry, giving the friendships and flirtations some charm.
Common complaints
  • Unlikable protagonist Mbali is often described as spoiled, superficial, and mean, which makes emotional investment in her arc difficult.
  • Thin character depth Several roles feel like broad caricatures rather than nuanced students with clear motivations or growth.
  • Weak, generic plotting Storylines rely on familiar teen-drama clichés and lack a strong central throughline, causing the season to feel unfocused.
  • Overcrowded storytelling Too many character threads are juggled at once, so no single plot or relationship gets developed in a satisfying way.
