A maze with no monster

Eight episodes of The Deep State (2023), and I was still waiting for the machinery to serve something besides its own speed. Twists arrived on schedule. The surprise I wanted did not. This Gulf thriller looks expensive, moves fast, and never quite chooses a destination.

Episode one opens on a plane crash. Slow-motion debris. A pilot tumbling through the sky.

The camera hangs until you cannot miss the stakes. Michael Bay filtered through a Gulf lens. Then the season keeps pulling the same borrowed moves.

A high-angle walk through a neon alley. A Dutch tilt in a fight. A cut to black at the peak.

I have seen the suit. It was cut for someone else.

A dimly lit interrogation room, two men seated across from each other, one in shadow, the other bathed in harsh overhead light.

Bashar and Khaled are intelligence officers trying to clear a minister after that crash. Adnan, the accused, is Faisal Al-Amiri. Power should be his armor and his weak spot.

We get boardrooms, back alleys, modernist apartments that advertise a secret. We never hear him think. Individual morality set against state deception is a rich argument.

The series barely starts it. Chess pieces, no faces.

Inside "The Deep State" (2023): A High-Stakes Political Thriller with Kuwaiti Star Power

Said El Marouk’s The Deep State (2023) has emerged as one of the most talked-about Kuwaiti series of the year, blending political intrigue with a star-studded cast. The show follows two intelligence officers as they unravel a scandal tied to a pilot’s death, only to uncover a web of corruption reaching the highest levels of government. latestnetflix.com's take is that with a plot that spans international borders—including a pivotal trip to Cuba—the series promises a gripping narrative, but behind-the-scenes details remain scarce.

A Cast of Kuwaiti Heavyweights

The Deep State boasts an ensemble of some of Kuwait’s most recognizable actors. Leading the charge are Bashar Al-Shatti and Khaled Al Mudhaffar, who play the intelligence officers at the heart of the investigation. Their characters’ mission to clear a high-ranking official’s name—only to discover his guilt—adds layers of moral ambiguity to the story .

Joining them are Rawan Bin Hussein, a rising star known for her dramatic roles, and veteran actors like Saad Al-Faraj and Jassim Al-Nabhan, whose presence lends gravitas to the series. The full cast list, including Fahad Al-Abdulmohsen and Zainab Bahman, suggests a mix of seasoned performers and fresh faces, though specifics about their characters remain under wraps .

Plot Twists and International Intrigue

The series’ premise—a pilot’s death sparking a government scandal—hints at a Homeland-esque thriller, but with a distinctly Kuwaiti perspective. Early descriptions confirm the intelligence officers’ journey takes them to Cuba, where they uncover the National Security Minister’s direct involvement in the deadly warplane deal . This international angle sets The Deep State apart from typical Gulf dramas, which often focus on domestic or familial conflicts.

However, details about the series’ structure—such as its episode count or whether it’s a limited series—are conspicuously absent from available sources. IMDb lists it as a "TV Mini Series," but without confirmation from the creators or broader industry reports, this remains unverified .

Behind-the-Scenes: What We Know (and What We Don’t)

Despite its high-profile cast and director, The Deep State has kept a low profile in terms of behind-the-scenes buzz. Said El Marouk, the series’ director and creator, is a respected figure in Kuwaiti television, but his previous work hasn’t always generated this level of star power. Whether the project was greenlit due to its timely political themes or the cast’s clout is unclear.

One notable gap in coverage is the lack of production details—no reports on filming locations, budget, or challenges faced during production have surfaced. Similarly, there’s no word on whether the series has been picked up for additional seasons or if it’s a self-contained story. For now, fans are left to speculate based on the tantalizing snippets of plot and cast .

Why the Hype?

The Deep State arrives at a time when political thrillers are gaining traction in the Middle East, with audiences hungry for stories that reflect regional power dynamics. The series’ premise—a government cover-up exposed by rogue agents—resonates in an era of global distrust in institutions. Add to that a cast stacked with fan favorites, and it’s no surprise the show has generated curiosity.

Yet, with so little official commentary or press coverage, the series risks being overshadowed by bigger-budget productions. If The Deep State delivers on its promise of suspense and intrigue, it could cement its place as a standout in Kuwaiti television. For now, though, the real drama may lie in what’s not being said.
