Chi era… - Lo show (2018) arrives with almost no metadata—no director, no cast list, latestnetflix.com maintains, no genre tags, not even a tagline. The synopsis is a shrug. Thirteen episodes, one season, and then silence.
It’s as if the series were beamed in from another dimension, a cultural artifact with no context, no fanfare, no explanation. And yet, here it is. Watching it feels like eavesdropping on a conversation that wasn’t meant for you.
What do you do with a show that refuses to announce itself?
The first episode opens in a dimly lit studio, the kind you’d find in a local public access channel from the ’90s. A host—unnamed, uncredited—stands behind a desk, staring into the camera with the forced enthusiasm of someone who’s been told to smile for too long. The set is bare: a blue curtain, a potted plant that looks like it’s seen better decades, a microphone that crackles with static.
The host introduces the topic of the night: "Chi era…"—"Who was…"—and then cuts to a montage of grainy archival footage, faces flashing by too quickly to recognize. Politicians, actors, musicians, criminals, ordinary people. The effect is disorienting, like flipping through a history book where the names have been erased.
There’s no plot, at least not in the traditional sense. Each episode follows the same structure: the host introduces a nameless figure from the past, and then the show becomes a collage of interviews, news clips, and reenactments, all stitched together with the loose thread of speculation. The subjects are never identified.
We’re given fragments—a voice, a gesture, a moment of conflict—and then left to piece together who these people were, or who we think they were. It’s less a documentary than a Rorschach test. The show doesn’t tell you what to think; it just holds up a mirror and lets you project.

Italian Netflix cards call it Chi era... - Lo show. The English title is The Who Was? Show. TMDB's Italian stub dates season 1 to July 11, 2018, and lists 13 episodes through October 3. Wikipedia and IMDb put the U.S. drop on May 11, 2018, all 13 half-hours in one dump. Same series. Penguin Random House's Who Was? books, FremantleMedia Kids & Family, Matador Content, Tap That Maple. latestnetflix.com's take is that JustWatch Italy still maps the Italian title onto the English original.

Deadline had the order a year earlier, on May 10, 2017. Thirteen half-hours of live-action, animation, sketches, and guest bits. Showrunner Rich Korson. Writers from Conan, The Daily Show, Roseanne, and Inside Amy Schumer, including Brian McCann and Elliott Kalan. The books had already sold more than 20 million copies. Variety, on premiere day, let Korson and McCann joke that the producing bench had 900 Emmys between them. That number is their line, not a trophy count I can audit.
