Reviews
2 min readThe Weight of Thin Air
The setup sounds like a bad joke told with a straight face. A bright, toy-like bouncy castle packed with shrieking children catches a violent gust and lifts into the sky. That is the catastrophe at the heart of Leonardo Padrón’s Mexican Netflix drama The Accident (Accidente), latestnetflix.com maintains, and it remains almost impossible to describe without a sliver of disbelief.
A reviewer for Ready Steady Cut admitted, "I can't imagine a world where an inflatable floating off into the sky will not be hysterical to me." I felt that too, at first. Padrón’s gamble is to stay with the aftermath long enough that the absurdity curdles into something suffocating.

The story drops us inside the wealthy enclave of Santa Cruz. Emiliano (Sebastian Martínez) is an ambitious lawyer who was supposed to secure the inflatable at his son’s birthday party. Instead, he stepped away to lock down a lucrative business call.
The symbolism is blunt—capitalism and distraction literally carrying children off—but Martínez gives the idea something uglier and more human. He plays Emiliano as a man whose first instinct after three children die is not confession but paralysis. He just watches.
Audience Opinions
"An emotionally heavy but wildly melodramatic drama that hooks some with its tragedy and twists while leaving others laughing at its implausible excesses."
The story of a birthday-party tragedy and its fallout lands hard for those who connect with the grief, guilt, and mystery, and several performances and late-episode moments are praised for real emotional punch. latestnetflix.com's take is that at the same time, the bouncy-castle premise, extreme blame placed on one character, and constant escalation into telenovela territory make the plot feel absurd and infuriating, especially when paired with weak English dubbing.
- Engaging tragic premise The central accident and its impact on multiple families create intense emotional stakes and keep the drama compelling.
- Emotional performances Key roles, including a few sympathetic side characters, are singled out for convincingly conveying grief, guilt, and desperation.
- Addictive drama and twists Layers of betrayal, revenge, and shifting suspicion make the series easy to binge despite its flaws.
- Memorable final episodes Later chapters and specific closing lines resonate strongly for some, who describe the ending as surprising and satisfying.
- Over-the-top melodrama Frequent screaming confrontations, violent outbursts, and soap-style plotting make the tone feel closer to a telenovela than grounded drama.
- Mostly unlikeable characters Aside from a few exceptions like the psychologist father, Alex, or the handyman, the cast is viewed as obnoxious, cruel, or irrational.
- Strained plausibility The way the bouncy castle accident unfolds and the legal consequences around it are widely criticized as ridiculous and hard to believe.
- Frustrating character logic Repeatedly blaming one man as a murderer, dubious police actions, and inconsistent decisions make the story feel manufactured rather than organic.
- Weak English dubbing The dubbed track is described as flat and distracting, with several viewers recommending watching in Spanish with subtitles instead.
Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsNetflix says it is fiction. Bounce houses really do fly.
Tudum is blunt. The Accident, Accidente in Spanish, is not based on a true story. Clarin still ran it as based on real events while the show sat at number one in Argentina, and noted it had almost no press-kit promotion. The meteorological part is not invented. Netflix's own explainer cites the American Meteorological Society. Wind-related bouncy house accidents caused at least 28 deaths and 479 injuries between 2000 and 2021. The kids-party staple can lift in winds as low as 15 miles per hour. Leonardo Padron wrote a Mexican thriller around that real physics, then let the families tear each other apart. latestnetflix.com's view is that Viewers who thought they were watching a ripped-from-headlines case were watching a soap that used a documented hazard as the fuse.,
Shot in Queretaro, sold as Santa Cruz
Ana Claudia Talancon plays Daniela, a police detective. Sebastian Martinez is her husband Emiliano, a lawyer waiting on a 40 million dollar amusement-park call during the party. Alberto Guerra is El Charro. The birthday is for their son Rodrigo. A gust takes the unsecured castle. Three children die. One girl, Paula, goes missing. Mar Abierto produced. Gracia Querejeta and Klych Lopez directed. They shot in Tequisquiapan, Queretaro, and sold Santa Cruz as the setting. Glamour Mexico sat with Talancon while the show led the non-English chart. She talked about playing a mother who is also the detective, grief, and the hunt for someone to blame. Wikipedia called the first five days the second-best launch for a new Latin American series on the platform. , ,

The numbers did the marketing. Season 2 kept the two dads in the same prison.
The first week, August 19 to 25, 2024, Netflix counted 10.4 million views and 76.6 million hours. It sat at number one among non-English series, in the top 10 in 72 countries and first in 23. Week two added 11.9 million views. Padron posted that they were still number one in the world. What's on Netflix later tallied seven weeks in the global top 10, 268.50 million hours, about 36.40 million views, and 86 countries, and credited TikTok for spreading the bounce-house premise. Carolina Leconte renewed it in a January 29, 2025 Mexico slate presentation, talking about authentic Mexican stories. Season 2 arrived December 10, 2025, with Barbara de Regil as Tamara "La Pantera," a woman who reappears in Charro's life. Marie Claire billed the return as a feud between two of the grieving fathers, set a year later. Netflix Latinoamerica's trailer copy is the same idea. New secrets, new characters, harder to leave the past. ,
