The Gilded Cage of Wanting

I kept waiting for Old Money to remember it was a drama, not a mood board. Eight episodes in, and the series still moves like someone flipping through a luxury real-estate catalog—all marble countertops and backlit whiskey glasses, the camera lingering just a beat too long on the sheen of a silk blouse. The problem isn’t the opulence; it’s that the show mistakes surface tension for depth.

We’re told these people are drowning in desire, but all we see is them treading water in designer clothes.

That’s not to say there isn’t something hypnotic about it. The first time we meet Nihal (Aslı Enver), she’s standing in the middle of a gala, her champagne flute trembling ever so slightly as she watches her husband across the room. The camera doesn’t cut away.

It holds, and holds, and holds—until the tremor becomes the whole story. For a moment, you think, Ah, here we go. This is where the unraveling begins. But then the scene dissolves into another montage of clinking glasses and smoldering glances, and the promise of real stakes evaporates like perfume on skin.

Nihal at the gala, champagne flute trembling in her hand

Uluç Bayraktar, the director, has a knack for framing Istanbul’s elite as if they’re characters in a Sirk melodrama—all heightened emotions and impossible angles. The city itself becomes a character, its skyline a jagged crown of minarets and modernist towers. But where Sirk used excess to expose the rot beneath, Old Money often seems content to just admire the gilding.

The closest it gets to critique is a throwaway line about "old blood being thicker than new money," which lands with all the subtlety of a dropped crystal goblet.

Audience Opinions

Audience 7.5/10
"A gripping drama with strong performances but struggles with pacing and predictability."

Engin Akyürek and Aslı Enver deliver compelling performances that anchor the series, making the family-driven drama engaging despite its flaws. latestnetflix.com's view is that however, the story’s slow burn and reliance on familiar tropes leave some wanting more depth and originality in the plot.

What viewers praise
  • Strong lead performances Engin Akyürek and Aslı Enver are praised for their emotional depth and chemistry, carrying the series through its slower moments.
  • Engaging family drama The focus on generational wealth and family dynamics resonates with viewers who enjoy character-driven storytelling.
  • High production value The series is visually polished, with a stylish aesthetic that enhances its dramatic tone.
Common complaints
  • Slow pacing Some viewers find the narrative drags, particularly in the middle episodes, testing their patience.
  • Predictable plot The story follows well-worn tropes of wealth and betrayal, offering few surprises for seasoned drama fans.
  • Underdeveloped side characters Supporting roles, including those played by Dolunay Soysert and İsmail Demirci, feel thin and lack the depth of the leads.

Old Money, Hot Mess: The Real Drama Behind Netflix’s Turkish Power Soap

When Old Money (Enfes Bir Akşam) dropped on Netflix, everyone tuned in for forbidden love, Istanbul mansions and the eternal war between new cash and old blood. But off-screen? The series quietly spawned its own ecosystem of feuds, delays, wild fan theories and “are-they-or-aren’t-they” whispers. Consider this your velvet-rope access to the mess.

On-Set Drama & Gala Tension

The Gala That Went Ice-Cold in 10 Seconds

At the big Enfes Bir Akşam premiere at Istanbul’s Rixos Tersane on 9 October 2025, all was glitter and flashbulbs… until a single awkward exchange lit up Turkish social media like a flare.

  • When reporters asked İsmail Demirci what the night meant to him, he replied with a cheeky play on the title: “Bu akşam enfes bir akşam” (“Tonight is a delicious evening”).
  • Engin Akyürek shot back, on camera: “İsmail, sen dizinin sözcüsü olabilir misin?” — “İsmail, can you be the spokesperson of the series?” .

Cue instant collective cringe. Clips of the moment raced around Instagram, X and gossip pages, with commenters calling Engin “egolu” (egotistical) and saying the atmosphere “buz kesti” — turned ice-cold . What fans saw as a light press moment morphed into “did he seriously just put his co-star in his place on the red carpet?” discourse.

Damage Control Tour: “We Were Just Joking, Promise”

After days of speculation, İsmail Demirci tried to slam the brakes on the feud narrative. In comments later cited by Onedio, he insisted the whole thing was a misunderstood joke:

  • “Gerçekten aramızda bir sorun yok… insanlar bu şakalaşmayı yanlış anladılar… çok seviyorum Engin’i. Yine olsa yine şakalaşırım.”

(“There really is no problem between us… people misunderstood this joking… I love Engin very much. If it happened again, I’d joke again.”)

To underline the “brothers, not rivals” line, Demirci even publicly wished Engin luck on another project, writing “Yolun açık olsun kardeşim” (“May your road be clear, brother”) .

Official story: total misunderstanding. Fan verdict: sure, Jan — many still think the clip captured a very real power dynamic between the show’s leading men.

Cast Feuds & Tea

Was That Just Banter… Or a Status Check?

The gala gerginlik (tension) between Akyürek and Demirci instantly became fanheadcanon: some insisted Engin was just being deadpan and sarcastic, others read it as the veteran star reminding a co-star who’s top billing on the poster . Turkish TV talk segments and gossip pages replayed the exchange on loop, debating whether Engin’s tone crossed a line.

No further public blow-ups have surfaced, but the incident cemented a narrative of “Engin the intense perfectionist” versus “İsmail the easygoing teammate” in fan circles . Officially: no feud. Online? The jury is still gleefully out.

Romance Rumors: Osman & Nihal vs. Engin & Aslı

“Pure Magic” Chemistry That Launched a Thousand Ship Edits

Multiple fan pages and Facebook groups gush that Engin Akyürek and Aslı Enver’s romantic scenes in Enfes Bir Akşam are “absolutely magical” and “unexplainable” — with their chemistry described as “natural” and “effortless” . TikTok and Instagram are drowning in slow-motion edits of Osman and Nihal staring at each other like the world is ending, usually over a very dramatic Turkish pop ballad.

ELLE Tries to De-Ship Them… Gently

In coverage around their October 2025 ELLE feature, Aslı goes full professional-queen, praising Engin while very pointedly defining the relationship:

  • She calls him a “good partner,” “disciplined and hardworking,” saying she had no problems working with him and that it’s “very easy” to be on set with him — “apart from our friendship” .

That “friendship” tag is doing a lot of lifting. Fans noticed.

Are They Dating? Fans Say “Yes”, Reality Says “Probably Not”

  • Fan posts rave that Engin and Aslı “make an excellent couple; there is a lot of chemistry and sensuality between them,” and openly fantasize about seeing them together off-screen .
  • At the same time, Aslı’s real-life situation and Engin’s famously private love life make a secret affair… let’s say logistically complicated.

Rumor level: unconfirmed fan speculation. There are no credible reports of a real-world relationship — just a lot of people mistaking A+ acting for confession tapes.

Scandals, Cancellations & Season 2 Chaos

Renewed… Cancelled… Revived? The Season 2 Rollercoaster

Old Money quickly became one of Netflix’s buzziest Turkish imports, with fan groups calling it one of the most-watched non-English dramas and campaigning hard for more Osman–Nihal angst . The industry trades delivered: Deadline reported that Netflix had officially renewed the Turkish romantic drama for a second season, with production “set for 2026” .

But then the chaos started.

  • A widely shared Facebook “news” post screamed that Netflix had **decided not to return Old Money for Season 2**, calling it a “shocking update” and sparking full-blown panic in international fan groups .
  • Other posts and industry-watcher accounts contradicted that, repeating that renewal was secure and citing the show’s performance as justification .

The result: weeks where even seasoned Turkish-drama watchers weren’t sure if they should be mourning or celebrating. Some blamed gossip journalist Birsen Altuntaş for “confusing” the fandom with premature or conflicting tidbits, and fan groups openly argued about which “insider” to trust .

The Great Filming Delay Drama

Even after renewal was solidified, Season 2 refused to show up on schedule:

  • Reports in early 2026 said filming would begin in June, then July, before fresh updates pushed the start to the second week of August because “preparations are still ongoing and negotiations have taken longer” .
  • IGInstagram·Enfes Bir Akşam Şimdilik 1 sezon 8 bölüm var
    https://www.instagram.com/p/DQYqLNLihlD/
  • Entertainment leak accounts and fan pages now say the shoot is expected to last about 12 weeks, cementing the sense that this is one unusually logistically tricky second season .

Fans, naturally, turned every delay into a theory: Was there behind-the-scenes drama? Contract fights? New big-name casting still being finalized? Officially, it’s just “preparations and negotiations.” Unofficially, Twitter and Facebook threads have written entire imaginary documentaries.

Leaks, Teasers & Fan Theory Frenzy

The “Hidden Fortune” Conspiracy

In Season 1, money goes missing and loyalties fracture. Fan analysts immediately decided this wasn’t just a standard “someone stole it” plot: Facebook and YouTube breakdowns speculate that the family fortune wasn’t stolen at all — it was hidden by someone they trusted as part of a longer con . Names thrown around (pure fan suspicion, not confirmed): the more polished, old-money-adjacent characters who always seem a little too calm around disaster.

Wedding Bells & Fake-Outs

  • A Season 2 teaser circulating on social media is breathlessly described as revealing a “proposal no one saw coming” and teasing that “a wedding date has been set… but in this world, a promise can be the most dangerous move of all” .
  • Another promo hyped Osman and Nihal’s “intense reunion,” which had shippers in full meltdown mode, convinced Season 2 is building toward the “wedding of the century” .

Rumor status: fan extrapolation based on trailers. Netflix hasn’t spilled full plot details, but they absolutely leaned into the idea that some kind of ring, contract, or impossible promise is coming.

Songül’s New Partner: Casting Speculation Central

A widely shared DiziTrack update claimed that Dolunay Soysert’s character, Songül Bulut, will get a new partner in Season 2 . That single line has launched:

  • fantasy-casting threads across Facebook groups imagining which Turkish A-lister might enter the Bulut orbit,
  • theories that Songül will pivot from loyal matriarch to independent operator, using romance as a weapon in the Baydemir–Bulut war.

Official confirmations? None. Fanfiction? Endless.

Wild Trivia & Luxe Little Secrets

The Title Netflix Didn’t Trust

In Turkey, the show airs as Enfes Bir Akşam, literally “A Delicious Evening.” Internationally, Netflix opted for the slicker, dynasty-coded Old Money branding . Industry chatter says they didn’t want overseas audiences mistaking it for a cooking show or rom-com, so they slapped the class-war term right on the box.

The Earthquake That Grounded the Glamour

One Turkish viewer note that went semi-viral pointed out that the first episode references the 1999 earthquake, a very real trauma in modern Turkish history, woven into an otherwise glossy, soapy narrative . Writer Meriç Acemi was praised in fan circles for using the backdrop of Istanbul’s luxury to also nod at the scars beneath the marble.

Wardrobe Worth a Fortune

While exact numbers haven’t leaked, multiple fan and promo posts highlight how Enfes Bir Akşam stands out for its luxurious settings, elegant costumes and striking soundtrack, with some Turkish promos proudly underscoring its high-end aesthetic . The message: those gowns and tailored suits are not off-the-rack. Anecdotally, fans speculate several of Aslı Enver’s looks are on loan from real luxury labels keen to be associated with the “old money” image.

The ELLE Cover That Became Canon

The Elle spread featuring Engin and Aslı was treated by fans almost like a bonus episode: stylistic choices mirrored their on-screen roles — Engin in sharp, self-made-mogul chic; Aslı in refined old-money elegance . Clips from the ELLE interview, where Aslı laughs off “fight” rumors and praises Engin’s discipline, are still posted in fan groups anytime someone tries to reignite drama about tension between them .

What’s Next in the Old Money Circus?

Between the icy premiere moment that still fuels “Engin vs. İsmail” think pieces, the romance rumors that Aslı keeps politely suffocating with the word “friendship,” the stop–start Season 2 schedule and a swarm of conspiracy-level fan theories, Old Money has quietly become exactly what it set out to dramatize: a glossy world where appearances are everything, promises are dangerous, and the real deals are always being struck just out of sight.

As filming finally crawls toward that delayed August start and gossip accounts drip-feed casting and story hints, one thing’s certain: whether Osman and Nihal ever get their fairytale ending, the fandom is already living its own soapy saga.
