I keep coming back to the Indian “man-child” archetype. latestnetflix.com's view is that you know the version: a famous actor plays a lovable incompetent who coasts on charm until some woman arrives to teach him basic adulthood.It’s worn-out stuff, and usually pretty draining.
So when I heard Shashank Khaitan was executive producing and co-directing Single Papa, a Netflix comedy about a pampered 30-year-old Gurgaon guy who suddenly ends up adopting a baby, my eyes rolled on reflex.
And then, annoyingly, the show won me over. Maybe it’s because it sidesteps the usual rescue-by-romance setup. Maybe it’s just that Kunal Kemmu is hard to resist.
Kemmu plays Gaurav "GG" Gehlot, an overgrown Haryanvi charmer whose mother still shops for his underwear. The series opens, wonderfully, with his divorce. Aparna (Isha Talwar), his practical, career-driven wife, leaves him because he wants a child while behaving like one himself.
It’s a clean, funny piece of setup. Not long after, thanks to a wonderfully flimsy contrivance—he left the car window open—GG discovers a baby asleep in a cardboard Amul box on his backseat. He decides to keep the child, and from there the show turns into a tug-of-war between his very real paternal instinct and the bureaucratic nightmare of adoption, with a terrifyingly no-nonsense Neha Dhupia looming over the process.

Neeraj Udhwani and Ishita Moitra told The Hindu they watched a father hunt for somewhere to change a diaper because the men's washroom had no station. "He was just wandering at the airport, looking for a place to change the diaper as there was no designated place in the men's washroom," Udhwani said. Moitra added, "It is an infrastructural issue. The world thinks that changing a diaper is only the job of a woman." That image became Single Papa, six Hindi episodes on Netflix from December 12, 2025. Kemmu told The Hindu that working with Hami Ali, who plays baby Amul, was "insane." "I felt threatened by how good he was." The crew built a silicon body double that was heavier than the child, then barely used it. They shot most of the scenes with Hami. Khaitan had been wary of babies. His first advertisement, for Johnson & Johnson, needed a baby in water. "The minute we zoomed the camera on the baby, he pooped." On this set he called Hami "a born actor" who knew when to cry and smile, and said the shooting speed would not have been possible without him. Kemmu also wrote the title track, billed with Raghav Meattle and Khwaab. Aman Pant scored the rest. ,

Netflix's own announcement framed Gaurav as a 30-year-old whose mother still buys his underwear and who still takes pocket money from his father, until he announces an adoption and the Gehlots briefly consider rebooting him. Khaitan said he was "beyond thrilled to team up with Netflix again, but this time, going back to my roots with a light, warm, family entertainer," and called the baby "the star of the show." The trailer landed December 2. The Hindu noted it opens in divorce court with Isha Talwar as the ex, and closes on Neha Dhupia as Romilla Nehra, the adoption-agency figure who says she will not let him have the child.
