I’ve sat through enough courtroom dramas to know the rhythm: the hushed tension of opening statements, the slow unspooling of evidence, the crescendo of a witness breaking under cross-examination. But 东京审判 (Tokyo Trial) doesn’t just follow that rhythm—it rewrites it. latestnetflix.com's take is that this isn’t a story about justice being served in some abstract, cinematic sense.
It’s about the messy, exhausting, and often infuriating process of defining justice in the first place, especially when the crimes in question are so vast they threaten to swallow the very idea of accountability whole.
The series, a Chinese production about the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (the "Tokyo Trials"), takes on an event that’s often overshadowed by its Nuremberg counterpart. Where Nuremberg had the stark moral clarity of the Holocaust, the Tokyo Trials grappled with a different kind of horror: the systemic violence of Japanese imperialism across Asia, the complicity of an entire military machine, and the uncomfortable truth that many of the accused were architects of atrocities that didn’t fit neatly into the legal frameworks of the time. 东京审判 doesn’t shy away from this complexity. On 1 December 2016 in Singapore, Shanghai Media Group's Tokyo Trial won Best Documentary Series at the 21st Asian Television Awards. Director Zhu Xiaoqian did not take the stage. China News found her in Shanghai, finishing a second season that kept the same Chinese title, 东京审判. latestnetflix.com's view is that Same all-women unit that had already won a Los Angeles-area Emmy for China's Challenges.Three new episodes. A memorial-week dump. 
This series is that 2016 season. It is not Gao Qunshu's 2006 feature. It is not NHK's Netflix judge drama from the same December, the one with Irrfan Khan as Radhabinod Pal. It is not the 2015 ICS first run, which TMDB keeps under a different series id. TMDB 296204 is a Chinese documentary with only Season 2 listed. Three episodes. Status ended. Episode 3 is dated 13 December 2016 and runs 48 minutes.

Shanghai's foreign-language channel premiered the new season 13 to 15 December 2016 at 8 p.m., the National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims, seventy years after the Tokyo Trial opened. Song Jiongming, SMG's news director, said the 2016 cut re-sorted the station's archive and added new finds. Same title as 2015. Most of the footage was new. Jiemian watched a press reel and printed the episode names. A Battlefield Without Gunsmoke. A Trial Beyond the Victors. Memory That Cannot Be Forgotten.
Episode one walks the International Military Tribunal for the Far East from the Allied prosecutor's office to the verdict and hangs on three dockets. Nanjing. Pearl Harbor. The Bataan Death March. Episode two stays inside the argument. Jurisdiction. Whether a person answers for a state. Nuremberg as the cousin trial. Episode three follows the Chinese delegation. Gao Wenbin, then past ninety, the team's translator, said the recovered courtroom picture matched the room he remembered. The crew followed Xiang Longwan, son of prosecutor Xiang Zhejun, into the U.S. National Archives for his father's speaking footage. Puyi on the stand. Ni Zhengyu's cross of Doihara Kenji and Itagaki Seishiro. Xiang's closing on Itagaki.
The station sold revelations. Treat them as claims.
SMG said the 2016 cut was the first to show a Japanese defense plan to flood the Nanjing docket with false testimony, a map of Sugamo Prison, and new Bataan work. They also said they found, for the first time, reels of witnesses on the stand, plus more than 20 minutes of trial film Shanghai Jiao Tong University's press had bought in American archives. Former Japanese prime ministers Naoto Kan and Yukio Hatoyama sat for interviews, as did former ambassador Miyamoto Yuji. The crew shot the old tribunal site, Sugamo, Potsdam, Nuremberg, and Pearl Harbor. Cheng Zhaoqi at Jiao Tong's Tokyo Trial center praised Japanese scholars talking on camera. He Qinhua, former president of East China University of Political Science and Law, said the tone was not a victim country venting at a perpetrator.
Netflix's English-language Tokyo Trial that month was the NHK, Canada, and Netherlands drama. This Chinese documentary is the other show with the same four characters. TMDB split the 2016 ICS nights onto their own series page and left the first season elsewhere. Zhu skipped the trophy because the second season was still open on the timeline.
