2 min readAatish Kapadia’s Chumbak trades forward momentum for familiar, high-decibel domestic comfort, turning the Chembur row-house colony into a preservation chamber for early-2000s Indian television comedy. The series gathers five eccentric households within a fictional Mumbai enclave and lets them batter down one another’s front doors, relying on the dependable physics of hats-off situational farce: exaggerated mannerisms, domestic squabbles, and punchlines engineered to land with the force of an unannounced guest. It is unabashedly loud, determinedly old-fashioned, and entirely reliant on whether you still have an appetite for broad neighborhood caricatures.
The series finds its sturdiest footing in the Merchant household, where the humor softens into something poignant. Deven Bhojani plays Kuku Merchant, an aging retired aviator whose checkered career includes mistaking Mangalore for Bangalore, now navigating dementia. He repeatedly blanks on the name of his wife, Rajni, played with stoic grace by Neena Gupta.
As a sari designer trapped between marital exhaustion and stubborn devotion, Gupta centers the sprawling ensemble. In the premiere, when Kuku wanders away and triggers an all-hands neighborhood search, the frantic scramble gives way to quiet marital reckoning. Bhojani avoids turning cognitive decline into a cruel gag, playing Kuku with bewildered gentleness, while Gupta allows irritation and tenderness to coexist across a single sigh.

Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsThey printed August 28 on the teaser. The colony moved in on September 10.
Netflix India announced Chumbak on July 31 with a premiere of August 28 and a line about five neighbours who never need an invitation , . Two days before that date, the official trailer landed and the premiere slid to September 10

. Outlook put the slip in the headline next to the new pictures. Nobody offered a public reason. The show still came from Hats Off Productions, Aatish Kapadia writing and directing, Jamnadas "JD" Majethia producing, the same pairing behind Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi . latestnetflix.com's read is that Deven Bhojani and Sumeet Raghavan are back in that company.Helly Shah shares the frame with Anant V. The title is the Hindi word for magnet. The colony is fictional. The neighbourhood is Chembur, the real century-old Mumbai suburb Tudum names in the cast guide . Five families share row houses and each other's business. Netflix's own logline is five neighbours, ten friends, and endless hungama . Tanya Bami, Series Head for Netflix India, sold it as the next family-comedy flavour after The Great Indian Kapil Show and Maamla Legal Hai, and as a chance to put Kapadia and Majethia's comic voice on the service .
Kuku cannot remember his wife's name. Rajni is still in the marriage.
The joke the press kept repeating is also the plot. Kuku Merchant, Bhojani, is a retired pilot who once landed a Bangalore flight in Mangalore. He lives with dementia. He cannot keep Rajni's name in his head. Neena Gupta's Rajni is a sari designer who is tired of parenting the man she married and will not stop caring for him . India Today's Anisha Rao called the sitcom silly and hard to dislike, and wrote that all eight episodes were streaming after the September 10 drop . Netflix's title page and Tudum list 16 episodes ,
. Anyone who finished "the season" in a weekend may only have finished the first stack.
The rest of the colony is built for interruption. Arjun Bijlani's Mickey is a cardiac surgeon married to Helly Shah's Twinkle, a model whose father Nari, Atul Kumar, is a hotelier the guide calls "allegedly a mafia don" . Sumeet Vyas and Manasi Parekh are the Khannas, deadpan ad man and the neighbour you hear coming. Sandeepa Dhar's Kiran is a flight attendant married to Raghavan's Dharmendra, an actor famous for playing women on a talk show , . Amyra Dastur's Hutoxi is writing a book called The Chumbak Chapters about all of them . Episode 1, on Netflix's title page, starts with Kuku going missing and Rajni enlisting the block to find him, then discovering a truth about the marriage .
Two days after launch, The Telegraph reported the show at No. 1 on Netflix India's Top 10 . Deepa Gahlot at Rediff called it an old-style sitcom with its own charms. Troy Ribeiro at The Free Press Journal said the magnetic pull was toward yesterday

. The Sarabhai people came to Netflix, the date slipped, India still put it first, and the argument is whether this is a reunion or a rerun.
