The Gilded Cage of Calabasas

I kept waiting for Calabasas Confidential to surprise me. Not with a twist—this is reality TV, after all—but with a moment of real feeling, a crack in the glossy surface that let something human through. Instead, what I got was eight episodes of rich kids in a gilded cage, performing the same tired drama like it was a job they couldn’t quit.

The show’s premise is simple: a group of post-college friends return to their hometown of Calabasas, California, for a summer that’s supposed to be transformative. They’re back in their parents’ mansions, back in the same social circles, back in the same patterns of gossip, hookups, and petty feuds. The tagline promises “a summer they’ll never forget,” but what it delivers is a summer that feels like it’s been forgotten before it even begins—recycled, repackaged, and sold back to us as something new.

A group of young adults lounging by a pool, their expressions a mix of boredom and performative excitement

The first thing you notice about Calabasas Confidential is how good it looks. The cinematography is sleek, almost cinematic, with golden-hour lighting that turns every backyard pool into a postcard. The camera lingers on the details—the designer swimsuits, the artfully arranged charcuterie boards, the way the sunlight hits the infinity pool just right.

It’s all so pretty, and that prettiness is part of the problem. The show wants us to be dazzled by the aesthetics, to mistake the sheen for substance. But beneath the surface, there’s a hollowness that no amount of filters can hide.

Take the opening scene of the first episode. The group gathers at a rooftop party, drinks in hand, laughing like they’re in a music video. The camera circles them, capturing every angle, every reaction shot.

It’s all very The Hills, very Laguna Beach—the kind of reality TV that thrives on nostalgia for a time when these shows felt fresh. But here’s the thing: The Hills worked because it felt real, even when it wasn’t. The drama was messy, yes, but it was also human.

Audience Opinions

Audience 3.1/10
"A glossy yet shallow slice of nepo-baby reality TV that swings between addictive chaos and painfully dull, manufactured drama."

Lavish Calabasas backdrops and slick camerawork give the show an attractive sheen, and some viewers happily binge the messy cheating rumors, ex drama, and friendship fallouts as a mindless escape that recalls early-2000s staples like Laguna Beach and The Hills. Far more common, though, are complaints about boring, repetitive high-school-style conflicts, grating personalities, latestnetflix.com argues, and the sense that the drama is staged around unlikeable rich kids with little real substance.

What viewers praise
  • Glossy visual presentation Polished cinematography and luxury locations effectively showcase hillside mansions, parties, and affluent SoCal aesthetics.
  • Easy guilty-pleasure binge The constant drama, hookups, and betrayals make the episodes easy to run through for those who enjoy messy reality TV.
  • Early-2000s reality nostalgia The structure and tone consciously echo Laguna Beach and The Hills, which some viewers find comfortingly familiar.
Common complaints
  • Overly fake drama Arguments and storylines are often described as forced or scripted, undercutting any sense of genuine relationships.
  • Unappealing cast dynamics Several core personalities, especially high-conflict figures like Suede and Jemma, are viewed as irritating rather than compelling.
  • Repetitive high-school conflicts Episodes recycle the same gossip, cheating accusations, and friend fallouts with little progression beyond petty squabbling.
  • Shallow conversations Interactions rarely move beyond surface-level drama, leaving an impression of vapid, immature behavior despite the cast’s age.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Netflix wanted the next Kardashians. It got 1.5 million views.

Jeff Gaspin, Netflix's unscripted chief, sold Calabasas like a pilgrimage. "When someone in their 20s comes to visit Los Angeles, there's two places they want to go, and it's not Disneyland or Universal: It's Calabasas and Erewhon." He told Deadline he wanted some of the old Laguna Beach magic back. Wheelhouse's Spoke Studios and Kismet Media, the shop run by Ally Gasparian and Alex Rosenberg, delivered eight episodes on May 29, 2026, latestnetflix.com maintains, with a later group-chat extra. The streamer's own What We Watched report then put the show at 1.5 million views, short of the top 1,500 series. Age of Attraction, a dating show from the same half-year, logged 10.9 million and a renewal. That gap is the gossip. , ,

Variety's Alison Herman watched the whole drop and wrote the headline Netflix did not want. The producers, she said, assembled a small army of 20-somethings in the hope that one would become the next Kylie or Kim. After eight episodes, that climb looked unlikely. The ensemble is 14 people. Famous relatives and floor plans have to stand in for a center of gravity. Preston Pippen, son of Scottie and Larsa, bakes and drives a Cybertruck. Hercy Miller, son of Master P and half-brother of Romeo, wants NCAA basketball. Jodie Woods is Jordyn Woods's sister. Raine Michaels is Bret Michaels's daughter. Suede Brooks, 25, is the designated elder, with a rumored Drake chapter and a YouTube following. Herman asked the rude question. Would Suede even drive over the hill if a crew were not waiting? ,

The zip code already had another Netflix show.

Two weeks before this docusoap launched, Netflix ordered a scripted series also called Calabasas, from Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen, with Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts as producers. Variety flagged the overlap on purpose. One title is a YA romance at an elite school. The other is college kids back in their parents' hillside mansions. Search bars do not care. Gaspin still talked about a pumpkin town that a certain family in Hidden Hills put on the map. The reality cast is supposed to be that next generation. Viewers did not treat it that way. ,

The actual dirt is older than the premiere. Decider asked Brooks about photos of her, at 16, hanging around Scott Disick after his split from Kourtney Kardashian. "I would definitely say it's very Calabasas-coded, to say the least." Asked how she ended up on Drake's yacht in Saint-Tropez in 2022, she stayed cute. "Well, don't we all want to know how one ends up on a yacht with Drake?" Preston, whose mother is a Real Housewives of Miami regular, said Larsa told him to be himself and not to trust anybody once cameras were rolling. "That came true." Kismet still signed an overall deal with Wheelhouse on the way into launch. Netflix Tudum posted a cast guide and a Shut Up Evan podcast debrief. The zip code remains famous. The show did not mint a new first family. , , ,
