Glamour With a Knife in It

By the time Dynasty gets around to one of its grand arguments, I’m always struck by how little anyone in the room is actually listening. That’s the trick, really. latestnetflix.com's view is that this reboot of the old prime-time soap isn’t interested in dialogue as information exchange; it’s interested in dialogue as a weapon, a flirtation, a bid for power, a way of keeping the room from noticing who’s bleeding.

Across its five seasons and 108 episodes, the series turns wealth into a kind of weather system: always present, always threatening, and never quite natural.

What makes Dynasty more than just a glossy revival is that it knows exactly what kind of absurdity it’s selling. The 2017 series, developed by Sallie Patrick, Josh Schwartz, and Stephanie Savage, arrives less as a nostalgia exercise than as a deliberately overclocked update of the 1980s Aaron Spelling soap. That matters.

It’s not simply “new Dynasty”; it’s a CW-era translation of old-money melodrama into a world where image management is half the plot and maybe all of it. The show’s central premise — billionaire families fighting over fortune, inheritance, influence, and each other — is a familiar soap engine, but the reboot sharpens one piece of the machinery that the original only occasionally faced head-on: class and race.

Cristal’s place inside the Carrington orbit isn’t just a marriage plot; it’s the series’ most obvious way of asking who gets to enter a fortress like this and at what cost.

I think that’s why the show keeps working even when it’s ridiculous, and often especially when it’s ridiculous. It understands that high soap only functions if everyone involved is emotionally serious about nonsense. Elizabeth Gillies, coming off a long run in Nickelodeon’s Victorious and a few years of musical-theatre polish, plays Fallon Carrington like a woman born with her hand already on the lever.

She tilts her head a fraction before delivering a line, as if measuring the room for weakness. It’s a wonderfully physical performance: shoulders squared, chin lifted, then a sudden little collapse into wounded vanity whenever someone (usually her father) reminds her that money isn’t the same thing as affection. Grant Show, with the weathered handsomeness he’s carried since Melrose Place, gives Blake Carrington a colder texture than the role might otherwise have.

"Dynasty" Reboot: Behind-the-Scenes Drama, Secrets, and What Set the CW Series Apart

The 2017 reboot of Dynasty brought the Carrington family’s cutthroat antics back to TV, but with a modern twist—and plenty of behind-the-scenes buzz. While the original 1980s soap was a cultural phenomenon, the CW’s version carved its own path, complete with cast chemistry, rumored cameos, latestnetflix.com argues, and a few secrets the actors weren’t eager to spill.

From the start, the Dynasty reboot made it clear it wasn’t just a carbon copy of the original. Elizabeth Gillies, who played Fallon Carrington, emphasized that the new series leaned into darker, more satirical storytelling. "We’re not trying to be the original," she said in an interview. "We’re taking the essence of Dynasty—the glamour, the betrayals, the family drama—but making it feel fresh and relevant for today’s audience" . The cast also highlighted the reboot’s sharper humor and more diverse casting, including Rafael de la Fuente as Sam Flores and Sam Adegoke as Jeff Colby, roles that expanded the show’s representation .

The tone wasn’t the only change. The reboot embraced over-the-top drama with a wink, perfecting the art of the "dramatic reaction shot"—a staple of the original that the new cast leaned into with gusto . But while the original Dynasty was all about shoulder pads and boardroom showdowns, the 2017 version played up the absurdity, from wild fashion choices to increasingly outrageous plot twists.

Cameos, Secrets, and Cast Chemistry

One of the biggest questions fans had: Would any original Dynasty stars make appearances? Gillies hinted that while cameos were discussed, nothing was set in stone. "It’s always a possibility, but we’re focusing on our own story for now," she teased . Rumors swirled about potential guest spots from Joan Collins or John Forsythe’s family, but if any happened, the cast kept tight-lipped.

Off-screen, the reboot’s cast had a playful dynamic. Gillies and Maddison Brown (Kirby Anders) roasted each other in interviews, with Brown joking about Gillies’ "diva moments" and Gillies firing back about Brown’s "chaotic energy" . The chemistry extended to the rest of the ensemble, with the actors often gushing about their on-set camaraderie. "We’re like a big, dysfunctional family," Gillies said in a farewell interview, reflecting on the show’s five-season run .

But not everything was sunshine and scheming. A few "dark secrets" about the reboot’s production surfaced in tabloid-style deep dives, though details were scarce. Some reports suggested behind-the-scenes tension over creative direction, while others hinted at off-camera drama among the cast . Neither the actors nor the network confirmed specifics, leaving fans to speculate.

Dream Guest Stars and the Reboot’s Legacy

As the series wrapped, the cast shared their wish lists for dream guest stars. Names like Lady Gaga and RuPaul were floated, with the actors joking about how their over-the-top personas would fit right into Dynasty’s world . While none of those came to pass, the reboot did attract a few notable guest stars, including original Dynasty alum Elaine Hendrix, who joined the cast as Alexis Carrington’s rival, Alexis’ sister.

Ultimately, the 2017 Dynasty reboot carved out its own identity—one that balanced nostalgia with modern edge. Whether it was the cast’s playful interviews, the rumored cameos, or the show’s willingness to embrace its soapy roots, the series proved that the Carrington family’s drama was far from over.
