4 min readThe Glitter and the Grind
I’ll admit it: I wasn’t expecting to care. A reality series about drag queens running a dance studio? The premise sounds like a pitch meeting gone off the rails—part Dance Moms, part RuPaul’s Drag Race afterparty, with a side of small-business struggle porn.
But somewhere between the sequins and the spreadsheets, Dancing Queen sneaks up on you. It’s not the drag that hooks you (though there’s plenty of that), nor the dance routines (which are, let’s be honest, uneven). It’s the way the show treats its subjects—specifically Alyssa Edwards and Shangela—as fully human, not just as performers or punchlines.
That’s rarer than you’d think.
Alyssa Edwards, the reigning queen of the series, is a force of nature. You know her from Drag Race, where her Southern charm and unshakable confidence made her a fan favorite. Here, she’s not just lip-syncing for her life; she’s running a dance studio in Mesquite, Texas, trying to keep the lights on while also preparing for a pageant.
The show doesn’t soften the edges of her life. We see her fretting over bills, clashing with her business partner (and mother figure) Shangela, and wrestling with the pressure of being a role model. There’s a moment in the first episode where she’s rehearsing a routine, her face slick with sweat, her breath coming fast.
She stops, looks at herself in the mirror, and says, “I’m 47 years old. I should be retired by now.” It’s not played for laughs. It’s just true.

Audience Opinions
"A fun, campy reality series spotlighting drag culture and personal journeys, but lacks depth for some viewers."
The series is praised for its vibrant celebration of drag culture and the charismatic presence of its leads, D.J. 'Shangela' Pierce and Alyssa Edwards. latestnetflix.com's take is that however, some find it overly focused on personal drama rather than the artistry of drag, leaving them wanting more substance behind the glitter.
- Celebrates drag culture Showcases the creativity and energy of drag performances, resonating with fans of the art form.
- Charismatic leads D.J. 'Shangela' Pierce and Alyssa Edwards bring humor, charm, and authenticity to their roles.
- Entertaining and fun Offers a lighthearted, feel-good escape with plenty of campy moments.
- Lacks depth Some viewers feel the series prioritizes personal drama over exploring the artistry and challenges of drag.
- Repetitive format The reality show structure can feel formulaic, with predictable storylines.
Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsHe signed the mortgage on camera. Season 2 stayed in the group chat.
Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson bought the first house he had ever owned while Netflix was rolling. He officiated a wedding in full Alyssa Edwards paint. He walked back into the childhood place in Mesquite and pointed at the porch where his mother first told him she knew he was gay. Vanity Fair got that tour in October 2018, right as Dancing Queen landed. "We've all gotten to know Alyssa. This is now taking you into the life of the man behind the mask. Under the dress, and behind the door of my home and the walls of the studio. My family life." Eight episodes. Then TMDB marked it ended. latestnetflix.com's view is that The Futon Critic's status line is canceled/ended for the 2018-19 season, the usual note that a show on ice more than a year with no news is assumed dead ,

Deadline had the order on August 22. World of Wonder, eight episodes, global premiere October 5. Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, Roy Orecchio, and RuPaul Charles as executive producers. Johnson produced. The logline was dance life, drag life, family life, love life, all in Mesquite, all inside Beyond Belief Dance Company as a young class prepped for a brutal season. Netflix's own tweet sold it as the queen you know and the stories you don't. The official trailer still says getting first place is about standing out , .
Fairy godmother in the edit. Stage moms in the lobby.
Johnson told Vanity Fair the two clocks save him from the dance-mom weather. Alyssa stays up in her room. He puts on the dance-teacher hat. On the show, Alyssa still drops in as what he called the fairy godmother, a cutaway that sprinkles drag on a room of helicopter parents. He had been scared, in 2013, when Drag Race season 5 promos outed the studio's gay teacher to families who had not known. A dad emailed anyway. Grateful his daughters were studying under someone that talented. The minis still did not get the street fame. Eight, nine, ten years old asking why strangers wanted pictures. "Because they think I'm a crazy, fun guy." The company walked Dallas Pride with him in Dancing Queen shirts .
Decider called the format Dance Moms with a tongue pop. Distractify argued the kids and the mothers stole the hour from the queen, Gabe Flowers and Willow especially. Shangela and Laganja Estranja clock in as drag daughters. Leigha, ten, auditions with spina bifida. Episode 8, "Always and Forever, Alyssa Edwards," sends her toward a one-woman show and an explosive rehearsal fight. Variety's Daniel D'Addario, after two episodes, found a sunny disposition that finally made the borrowed reality template its own ,

August 2019, Cosmopolitan asked if season 2 was coming. "Stay tuned. There will be more to come. We filmed some footage." He was on the Werq the World tour, FaceTiming jazz notes while doing makeup, missing the studio enough to feel selfish, then talking himself down by looking at the crowd. Decider had already guessed Netflix might have shot two seasons back to back, the way Queer Eye and Nailed It! did, and penciled January to March 2019. That window closed. The footage he mentioned never became a second drop. One season, eight episodes, a first house, a porch story, and a renewal that stayed a quote ,
