Love as a Bad Habit

I’ve always been suspicious of romantic comedies that treat love like a problem to be solved. The genre has a habit of reducing relationships to a series of obstacles—miscommunications, exes, meddling friends—until the inevitable third-act kiss erases all the mess that came before. The Hook Up Plan (Plan Cœur), Netflix’s French rom-com series, doesn’t entirely escape this trap, but it does something more interesting: it treats the mess as the point.

The show’s premise is simple, almost sitcom-simple. Elsa (Zita Hanrot), freshly dumped and spiraling, becomes the project of her two best friends, Charlotte (Sabrina Ouazani) and Emmanuelle (Joséphine Draï), who hire a male escort, Jules (Marc Ruchmann), to boost her confidence. What follows is less a love story than a series of escalating complications, each one revealing how little any of them—Elsa, Jules, or the friends—actually understand what they want.

That’s the show’s quiet strength. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, but it is trying to roll that wheel through the potholes of modern dating, where desire and self-worth are tangled up in algorithms, past heartbreaks, and the performative optimism of social media. The series is set in Paris, but it’s not the Paris of Amélie or Before Sunset—no golden-hour walks along the Seine, no philosophical café conversations.

This is the Paris of Uber Eats and group chats, of friends who mean well but keep making things worse, of people who swipe right out of boredom and swipe left out of fear. The city’s romantic reputation looms over the characters like a taunt, a reminder that they’re supposed to have it all figured out.

Three friends laughing on a Parisian balcony, the city's rooftops stretching behind them

The first season, in particular, thrives on this tension. Elsa’s friends hire Jules not because they think she’s ready for love, but because they’re tired of watching her wallow. It’s a classic rom-com setup, but the show’s tone is more Fleabag than Notting Hill—dry, self-aware, and just cynical enough to undercut the sentimentality.

The humor comes from the characters’ refusal to admit how little control they have over their own lives. Charlotte, the most assertive of the trio, is also the most delusional about her own romantic prospects. Emmanuelle, the quieter one, is nursing a crush on a coworker while pretending she’s above such things.

Netflix’s The Hook Up Plan (2018): Behind the Scenes of the French Rom-Com Sensation

Netflix’s The Hook Up Plan (Plan Cœur in French) burst onto screens in 2018, offering a fresh, binge-worthy take on modern romance with a distinctly Parisian flair. Starring Zita Hanrot as Elsa, a heartbroken woman whose friends hire a male escort (Marc Ruchmann) to boost her confidence, the series quickly became a global hit. But what went on behind the scenes of this addictive comedy? Here’s what we know—straight from the trailers and limited public buzz.

A Star-Studded Cast with Chemistry to Spare

The show’s success hinges on its ensemble cast, led by Zita Hanrot (Raw, A War) as the lovably messy Elsa. Her real-life friendship with co-stars Sabrina Ouazani (The Intouchables) and Joséphine Draï (Dix Pour Cent)—who play her ride-or-die besties Charlotte and Emmanuelle—added authenticity to their on-screen bond. Marc Ruchmann, as the enigmatic escort Jules, brought a mix of charm and vulnerability that made the central romance compelling.

Trailers tease the group’s dynamic, with rapid-fire banter and slapstick humor setting the tone. One standout moment from the footage shows Elsa and Jules singing a duet , hinting at the show’s playful, musical side. The chemistry between Hanrot and Ruchmann was so electric that fans shipped them off-screen, though neither has confirmed any real-life romance.

From French TV to Netflix’s Global Stage

The Hook Up Plan was originally a French production, created by Noémie Saglio and Julien Teisseire. While details about its development are scarce, the show’s Netflix acquisition marked a turning point for French-language series. Trailers emphasize its glossy, rom-com aesthetic—think Sex and the City meets Emily in Paris, but with a grittier edge.

The series’ international appeal was undeniable. Netflix’s marketing leaned into its Parisian setting, with trailers showcasing iconic landmarks like the Seine and Montmartre. The show’s bilingual dialogue (French with English subtitles) didn’t deter audiences, proving that subtitles were no barrier to bingeability.

Season 2: The Drama Continues

The first season’s cliffhanger—Elsa’s complicated feelings for Jules—left fans clamoring for more. The Season 2 trailer teases even messier love triangles, with new characters and higher stakes. Guillaume Labbé and Tom Dingler, who play Elsa’s ex and a potential love interest, respectively, are set to shake things up.

But not all was smooth sailing. Rumors (unconfirmed) swirled about behind-the-scenes tension between cast members, though no specifics emerged. The show’s writers kept plot twists tightly under wraps, with trailers offering only cryptic glimpses of the chaos to come.

The Legacy: A Cult Favorite with a Mysterious Future

Despite its popularity, The Hook Up Plan never got a third season, leaving fans with a bittersweet ending. The show’s blend of humor, heartbreak, and Parisian charm cemented its status as a cult favorite, though its cancellation remains a sore spot for viewers.

For now, the behind-the-scenes details remain frustratingly vague. No major interviews or tell-all books have surfaced, and the cast has moved on to other projects. But the trailers and fan edits keep the magic alive, proving that The Hook Up Plan’s legacy is far from over.
