The cake can fall over and still win me

I arrived in a bad mood. Another Netflix bake-off. Another country copying the American clock.

Mexico, France, and Germany already ran this format. Amateur bakers, fancy desserts, a timer, a collapse you can set your watch by. I have seen the gag. *Nailed It!

Spain* still worked on me. It does not apologize for the wreck. The wreck is the point of the hour.

A contestant's lopsided cake teeters precariously on a plate, its layers sliding in opposite directions while the judges look on with amused skepticism.

Pepa Charro hosts as La Terremoto de Alcorcón. She is not a traditional game-show MC. Camp, loud, a little feral.

She feels like the aunt who shows up with wine and a story that goes nowhere and becomes the only thing you remember from the party. Some viewers find her, and the judging, unappealing or confusing. I can see why.

Playful irreverence and actual fog sit close together here, and the series wobbles between them. The wobble is the texture. Precision was never the pitch.

Christian Escribà sits next to her as the professional pastry chef, and he is why the room does not float off. He will look at a cake that is closer to abstract art than dessert and say, with a straight face, "Well, it's... creative." Then he eats it.

Audience Opinions

Terremoto told El Espanol it was an honor, then added they would see how long she lasted. She called herself a pioneer because this was Netflix Spain's first entertainment show, first by calendar, not by quality, her words. She had already done Tu cara me suena in wild costumes.
