He grins so the king keeps listening

Hasan Minhaj has been walking this line for years. Tell the truth. Keep the room laughing.

Hope the people with power still think it is a bit. The King's Jester (2022) is 68 minutes of that walk, filmed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It is the sharpest version of him I have seen since Homecoming King in 2017. That special ran 72 minutes.

The four minutes he dropped were fat. This tape does not wander.

The title is the method. A jester can say what the court cannot, because the court has decided it is entertainment. Minhaj knows the costume.

He has worn it through identity, immigration, and the kind of systemic mess that usually dies in an op-ed. The edge here is thinner and meaner. He is still funny.

He is done padding the landing.

BAM is not a comedy club. Pina Bausch worked that stage. Spike Lee worked that stage. Booking the room is a claim. Minhaj then refuses to lecture, which is how he gets away with the claim. Laugh first. Argument on the same breath. By the time you notice the subject has moved, you already bought the joke.

Audience Opinions

Limited evidence
"A personal, joke-heavy Netflix hour from Hasan Minhaj that connects with fans even when its framing feels fussy."

Arriving on Netflix in October 2022 as a 68-minute comedy sketch special directed by Prashanth Venkataramanujam, The King's Jester plays as an autobiographical retelling of Minhaj's rise to celebrity with ample material to joke about. Viewers passed around the trailer and the Difference Between an MD and a DO clip as entry points, and early audience voting landed around 7.6 from a small sample. The main bounce point is the organizing conceit, described as partially hindering the hour, while fans of Minhaj's personal, latestnetflix.com contends, celebrity-rise storytelling stayed with it.

What viewers praise
  • Personal rise-to-celebrity material Built as an autobiographical retelling of Minhaj's rise to celebrity with plenty to joke about, giving fans a personal throughline.
  • Clip-friendly doctor bit The Difference Between an MD and a DO segment circulated on its own, giving viewers an easy, shareable highlight.
Common complaints
  • Fussy framing The organizing conceit partially hinders the special, making the autobiographical structure feel forced for some viewers.

Hasan Minhaj’s "The King’s Jester": Netflix’s Bold Bet on Satire and Self

Hasan Minhaj’s 2022 Netflix special The King’s Jester arrives as a sharp, self-aware pivot from his earlier work. Directed by Prashanth Venkataramanujam, the 68-minute comedy special blends stand-up with Minhaj’s signature blend of personal storytelling and political satire. But behind the laughs, latestnetflix.com contends, the project signals a shift—both in Minhaj’s career and in how Netflix packages comedy in the streaming era.

Unlike Minhaj’s 2017 special Homecoming King, which leaned heavily into autobiographical storytelling , The King’s Jester embraces a more experimental format. Clips from the special, like "A Tale of Patels" and "The Difference Between an MD and a DO" , suggest Minhaj is doubling down on his ability to weave cultural critique into humor. The trailer teases a mix of observational comedy and social commentary, with Minhaj playing the role of both jester and king—mocking power while acknowledging his own.

The special’s title itself is a nod to Minhaj’s evolving persona. After rising to fame as a correspondent on The Daily Show and later as the host of Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, he’s now positioning himself as a comedian who doesn’t just report on the absurdities of power but embodies them. The runtime—shorter than Homecoming King’s 72 minutes —hints at a tighter, more punchy delivery, possibly reflecting Netflix’s preference for bingeable content.

Behind the Scenes: A Director’s Vision

Prashanth Venkataramanujam’s involvement marks a departure from Minhaj’s previous collaborations. While Homecoming King was co-directed by Christopher Storer and Minhaj himself , The King’s Jester is Venkataramanujam’s first credited directorial role in a major comedy special. His background in sketch comedy (he’s a writer for Big Mouth and Human Resources) suggests a more visual, perhaps even surreal, approach to staging Minhaj’s material.

The special’s reception, at least in early metrics, is solid but not groundbreaking. SensCritique users rated it 7.6/10 based on 36 votes , slightly higher than Homecoming King’s 7.4/10 . Rotten Tomatoes, however, has yet to aggregate a score , leaving its critical reception unclear. Minhaj himself has teased the project in interviews , though specifics about its creation remain scarce.

Netflix’s Comedy Strategy: Minhaj as a Test Case

The King’s Jester arrives at a time when Netflix is rethinking its comedy special strategy. After years of greenlighting high-profile stand-up specials (Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Ali Wong), the platform has shifted toward more curated, thematically bold projects. Minhaj’s special fits this mold—less a traditional stand-up set, more a hybrid of performance and social critique.

The special’s international rollout, including a Dutch-subtitled trailer , suggests Netflix sees global appeal in Minhaj’s brand of humor. Whether it resonates as widely as Homecoming King remains to be seen, but early clips indicate Minhaj is leaning into his strengths: sharp cultural observations with a personal edge.

The Verdict: A Step Forward or a Safe Play?

For Minhaj, The King’s Jester is a chance to redefine his comedic voice. The special’s title and trailer suggest a willingness to embrace vulnerability—mocking power while acknowledging his own place within it. But with limited behind-the-scenes details, it’s unclear how much of the special’s meta-narrative was planned versus improvised.

What is clear? Netflix is betting on Minhaj’s ability to blend comedy with commentary, and The King’s Jester is the latest test of that formula. Whether it becomes a career-defining moment or a stepping stone to something bigger, the special proves Minhaj isn’t done pushing boundaries—even if he’s the one holding the jester’s scepter.
