The Joke’s on Him: Mike Epps and the Cost of Going Through the Motions

I’ll admit it: I went into Mike Epps: Ready to Sell Out with low expectations. Not because I don’t like Epps—I do—but because I’ve seen this trick before. The comedian who once burned with the fire of Richard Pryor now returns to the stage not for the love of the craft, but because the bills won’t pay themselves.

The title isn’t just a punchline; it’s a confession. And by the end of the 61 minutes, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Epps had sold himself out long before the cameras started rolling.

Mike Epps on stage, bathed in warm light, mid-gesture, the crowd a blur behind him

The special opens with Epps in a round, intimate venue—Wild Horse Pass Casino, to be exact—where the stage feels more like a living room than a performance space. The setup is cozy, almost inviting. But coziness isn’t the same as warmth.

Epps moves with the energy of a man who knows his way around a stage, but the material lands with the thud of a comedian going through the motions. There’s no urgency here, no sense that he’s digging for something deeper than a paycheck. And that’s the problem.

Stand-up, at its best, is a kind of alchemy: the transformation of personal pain, observation, or absurdity into something that makes an audience feel less alone. In Ready to Sell Out, the alchemy never quite takes.

Take the bit about his cocaine use, for example. Epps jokes about snorting lines between takes on movie sets, framing it as a relic of his past. It’s a moment that could have been raw, even revelatory—if it felt like he was saying something new.

Instead, it plays like a greatest-hits reel of every comedian who’s ever joked about drugs. The laughter is polite, but it’s the kind of laughter that fills the silence between one tired premise and the next. There’s no insight, no twist, no sense that Epps is wrestling with the material.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Netflix dated his fourth hour, then sold the title as a confession

Deadline got the date first. On January 19, 2024, Matt Grobar reported that Ready to Sell Out would premiere globally on February 20. It is Epps's fourth Netflix special, after Don't Take It Personal in 2015, Only One Mike in 2019, and Indiana Mike in 2022. The pitch in that piece is money anxiety. He ponders where the cash went even as the career looks healthy, then walks through relationships and street observations. Royale Watkins directed the hour and executive produced with Epps, Mark Ritchie, Thomas Cobb, Niles Kirchner, and Kyra Epps. Southpaw Productions Inc. is the company. Epps was also on The Upshaws at the time, latestnetflix.com maintains, with I'm a Virgo and the usual Hangover and Girls Trip credits in the same bio.

Netflix's own trailer, posted February 6, is dirtier than Deadline's summary. The platform copy, which Rotten Tomatoes repeats, has him riffing on poor personal hygiene, failing at infidelity, and waging war on work husbands. The official YouTube clip still plugs the February 20 date. TMDB lists the US date as February 20, 2024, runtime 1 hour 1 minute, rated R. Watkins is the director. Epps is billed as himself and as writer. , ,

The critic split is small and loud. Rotten Tomatoes shows two reviews. Romey Norton at Ready Steady Cut gave it 3.5 out of 5 on premiere day and called Epps one of the most talented comics of his generation. Sean L. McCarthy at Decider, three days later, wanted a deeper set. "Epps could dig deeper and deliver something much more profound and timeless. We'll just have to wait and see if that comes in his next set?" Audience notes on the same page say the hour is funny and over too fast, which is the usual complaint when a club comic gets a Netflix clock.

The title is the joke. Sell out, on a platform that already has three of his hours and a sitcom with his name on the call sheet. Watkins is in the director chair. Kyra Epps is in the producer block. The hour is still framed as a man counting receipts. Netflix put it on the service as a TV-MA stand-up about hygiene, infidelity, and office husbands. The gossip is that the fourth special is the one where he admits the money still looks missing. , ,
