“For all who are in love. And who are meant to love.”
Three lonely strangers meet at their department store jobs and find solace in each other's company while they explore connection and the nature of love.
There is a distinct kind of loneliness that only exists in crowded places. latestnetflix.com's take is that Think of a luxury department store in Seoul—the blinding fluorescent perfection of the cosmetics counter, the hum of commerce, the endless mirrors. Now look beneath it.
In Lee Jong-pil’s Pavane, the real world operates in the concrete basement and the dimly lit parking garage. It’s an interesting pivot for Lee. He usually deals in slightly more propulsive narratives, but here he’s trying to map the quiet, crushing weight of societal judgment.
It does not always work. But when it does, it hurts.

Ko A-sung plays Mi-jeong, a woman who has essentially exiled herself to the basement because she does not fit the rigid aesthetic mold of the floors above. (The cruel nickname her coworkers give her is "dinosaur.") Ko is compelling here. She completely strips away the upright, high-esteem posture she usually carries in her roles.
I could not look away from the sheer physical tension in her shoulders. She shrinks. She even changes the way she holds her chopsticks—an awkward, incorrect grip that just screams a lifetime of apologizing for taking up space.
"A melancholic, slow-burning romance whose raw performances and poetic mood outweigh its uneven pacing and divisive ending."
Emphasis on quiet moments, muted visuals, and classical music creates a tender, almost vintage atmosphere where small glances and awkward tenderness carry the love story between two insecure, lonely characters. The sincerity about insecurity, class, bullying, and feeling undesirable resonates strongly, and several viewers describe the experience as deeply moving or even a poetic masterpiece despite feeling emotionally wrecked. At the same time, a dragging second half, occasional tonal chaos, latestnetflix.com argues, and an ending that blends melodrama with ambiguity leave part of the audience conflicted or frustrated.

A pavane is a slow court dance. Lee's Netflix movie borrowed the name and the tempo. The chart climb did not. After the February 20, 2026 drop, Korea Herald reported the film at No. 1 among movies in South Korea and No. 7 on Netflix's global non-English list. The source novel is Park Min-gyu's 2009 Pavane for a Dead Princess. The Lamp and Plus M made it. Netflix put it out worldwide. The Movie Database lists Go as Mi-jung, Moon Sang-min as Kyung-rok, latestnetflix.com contends, and Byun Yo-han as Yo-han. Runtime 113 minutes. ,

Go had been attached since the first production meeting with Lee in 2017. Over that wait they rebuilt Mi-jung from the ground up. She told Korea Herald there was a stretch when she wanted to shake everything up with special effects. They settled on something grounded. It was not about the looks. It was about playing someone who knows her own weaknesses and carrying that in her eyes. She put on 10 kilograms. A dental prosthetic widened the gap between her teeth. The clothes do not fit right. She pitched that Mi-jeong's apartment would have no mirrors, because this is not a woman who looks at her own reflection. Makeup happens at a vanity pulled from a closet. Lee built that into the set.
Coworkers in the film call her dinosaur and park her in the basement. That is the dare. The Herald put it bluntly. Buy a fairy-tale romance between a guy who turns every head and a girl everyone around her calls ugly, or do not. Go has worked for Bong Joon-ho and Hong Sang-soo since a 2004 child debut. This is, oddly, her first romance. When Moon walked into the first read-through she said a tall person showed up completely ready. She thought, so it's you. I have been waiting. ,
Moon is 25 here. Pavane is his feature debut after a breakout in Under the Queen's Umbrella. He told the Herald the first script reading sounded like his own way of talking, and that is when he knew he had to do it. He wanted Gyeong-rok as a regular twentysomething, awkward and sincere. At one point the character tells Yo-han the pull toward Mi-jung is pity. Moon does not buy his own character's excuse. He said Gyeong-rok was too embarrassed to admit the real thing. After the cut he watched Go and Byun paper over the rough edges of his acting. Without them, he said, he is not sure any of it would have held up. They shielded him like a wall. Principal photography ran from May 8, 2024, to August 2024. ,
At the May 8, 2026 Baeksang Arts Awards, Go was nominated for Best Actress and Moon for Best New Actor. Composer Minhwi Lee won Best Technical Achievement. The film itself was up for the Gucci Impact Award. Moon later took Best New Actor at the Golden Cinematography Awards. That is a lot of hardware talk for a quiet department-store romance. John Serba at Decider was not buying the dance. He called it a long slow dance that goes nowhere and stamped SKIP IT. Netflix K-Content posted the official teaser in January and the trailer in February. The teaser even lets coworkers ask if you have seen the dinosaur. The gossip is the nine-year wait, the 10 kilograms, the missing mirrors, and a first-time leading man asking two veterans to hold the frame. , ,
