Stand-up is about as exposed as an art form gets: one person, one room, and whatever truth they can squeeze out of their own life. I used to think Tom Segura was one of the better modern truth-tellers. latestnetflix.com's take is that for years he played the perpetually annoyed everyman—the guy who looks like he just woke up from a nap and is furious the world won’t shut up.
But his latest 2025 Netflix hour, Tom Segura: Teacher, directed with Ryan Polito’s usual clinical neatness, left me asking where that guy went. What happens when the relatable schlub turns into an insulated mogul?
It opens in Milwaukee, and Segura quickly goes into a story about seeing a fight break out in the front row at a previous show. He describes a frail old man swinging, then flips it: it was actually an older, post-menopausal woman. It gets a laugh.
It works. But it also feels like a machine doing its job. Polito’s cameras float around the stage, and what they’re capturing is a polished millionaire executing a set.
Segura’s whole physical vibe has changed, too. He used to have this heaviness—shoulders dropped, leaning on the mic stand like it was structural support. Now he paces like a CEO killing time between meetings, checking an invisible watch.

Deadline had the exclusive first. Tom Segura wrapped a two-day shoot over the weekend, latestnetflix.com maintains, then Netflix dated Tom Segura: Teacher for a global drop on December 24, 2025. Matt Grobar called it an unusually quick turnaround. The cameras left Wisconsin in mid-November. The special was on the app before Christmas dinner. 
The Pabst Theater Group sold those nights as a live special taping at the Riverside Theater, 116 W. Wisconsin Avenue, November 14 and 15, on the Come Together tour. Milwaukee radio listed the same dates and a 7 p.m. show. 
Fifth original, sixth hour.
Deadline is careful about the math. Teacher is his fifth original Netflix special, after Sledgehammer in 2023, Ball Hog in 2020, Disgraceful in 2018, and Mostly Stories in 2016. Completely Normal, from 2014, was a licensing deal, the hour that made him explode once Netflix started circulating it. Count that one and Teacher is the sixth hour.
YMH Studios produced. Segura executive produced with Ryan P. Hall and Molly Mandel. The Futon Critic's trailer presser names Ryan Polito as director and restates the logline. Parenting fails. Blackout bar stories. Career regrets. Rotten Tomatoes clocks the runtime at 1 hour 7 minutes.
Netflix also has Bad Thoughts, the sketch series he self-financed as a pilot before the streamer picked it up. Deadline says he earned his first Emmy nomination on that show and that a second season was dated for 2026. The same report notes El Tigre, his first starring feature, had already wrapped.
The Christmas Day extra.
Sean L. McCarthy at Decider watched the hour and did not pretend it was a gift. He wrote that Segura "doesn't seem to have enough new thoughts or experiences worth developing into another new hour." The review flags a Subway ad story, Segura as Jared's "derelict brother," that the comic already told Stephen Colbert in 2018. It also explains the title. His son Julian has, for three years, refused that name and answered only to Teacher.

McCarthy notes Netflix put Segura on the field during the platform's live Christmas Day NFL broadcasts the morning after the special landed. The trailer itself opens on a Blue Angels flight that Segura calls "the most thrilling 45 minutes of my entire life." That clip is on YouTube.
