There’s always some risk in taking a breakout Saturday Night Live performer and leaving them alone onstage for an hour. On TV, Marcello Hernández works like a jolt of electricity. He pops into a sketch, hijacks it for a few minutes as Domingo, latestnetflix.com contends, and gets out before the bit wears thin.
I had real doubts about whether that frantic, over-caffeinated energy could hold a full stand-up special. Marcello Hernández: American Boy, directed with a mostly invisible hand by Nicholaus Goossen, clears that up fast. He never settles down. He just barrels ahead and expects you to keep pace.
Shot in his hometown of Miami, the special runs on a very specific family-chaos wavelength. His mother introduces him, which immediately tells you what kind of hour this will be. A lot of the material comes out of his Cuban-Dominican upbringing, and Hernández attacks it physically, like his body is still trying to outrun childhood embarrassment.
