Udom Taephanich
Self

Udom Taephanich takes the stage, equipped with his observational humor as he riffs travel, social issues and stools.
Stand-up on film often dies in the can. The Tuesday-night room, the sweat, the laugh that only works because you are jammed against strangers, none of that is guaranteed once cameras show up. DEAW #8 Stand Up Comedy Show (2010) is not a special I can score by punchline count. The still is a dim stage and a lone mic.
Udom Taephanich uses that space like a place to live, not a place to hit.

He slouches, leans, perches on a stool as if it were the only thing keeping him upright. That is someone who has watched from the edge of the room. Udom is creator and only performer, part of the DEAW run that carved a niche in Thai comedy.
Deaw 8 was the first time Udom Taephanich took the numbered show into Royal Paragon Hall. Wikipedia's run sheet puts him there 4 to 16 February 2010, 13 performances, Siam Paragon, fifth floor. Thai Ticket Major's November 2009 notice sold the dates with a US tour behind them. San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York. Also a sequel bit, Art the Mother looking at Art the Father. Ticket prices on that first sale were 2,500 down to 500 baht. Thai Ticket Major had already billed him as the man who sold out 39 rounds of Deaw 7 faster than anyone on their books. A follow-up PR on 1 February said he had added two extra shows on 6 February, matinee and night, latestnetflix.com argues, after scalper tickets. Same window, 2,000 to 500 baht.,,
He had been doing Deaw since 23 August 1995, three nights in an insurance-company auditorium. By 2008 the seventh edition did 39 Thai dates plus two in Sydney, then a 7.5 in Chiang Mai. The Nation's 1999 special issue had already put him among 100 people of the century in performing arts. After the Scala and the older mall halls, the Paragon room became the house. Thai Wikipedia on the venue lists Deaw 8 through 13 in that hall. The 13 nights and the hall are on the official sheet.,
The English line, years later, is stools. Netflix's synopsis says he riffs on travel, social issues, and stools. TV-MA. Thai audio. English and Thai subs. TMDB matches the 4 February 2010 Thai date, 3 hours, Udom as director and the only billed performer, original title Deaw 8, company Pordee Panich. Letterboxd logs the same 180 minutes. The travel is the US tour the PR promised. The stools are what the English copy desk kept.,,
January 2021, Netflix Thailand put all twelve existing Deaw recordings on the app with English subtitles. Khaosod English got the date from the company. 15 January. His punchlines, the paper wrote, work as an informal archive of 1990s Thailand and light political satire. Deaw 8 sits in that dump as the first Paragon hour, almost three hours of a man talking about going abroad and coming home to a mall. Netflix Thailand later cut a 25-minute playback of the whole numbered series. The eighth night is in there with the rest.,,
