The Land That Holds You

I’ve never been to the Orkney Islands, but after watching The Outrun, I feel like I’ve stood in their wind. Not the kind that howls for Instagram, but the kind that presses against your chest until you remember you’re alive. Nora Fingscheidt’s film doesn’t just use this landscape as a backdrop—it treats it as a character, one that’s equal parts refuge and reckoning.

And at its center is Saoirse Ronan, whose performance is so physically present that you forget you’re watching an actor. You’re watching a woman trying to outrun herself.

Rona stands on a windswept cliff, the sea stretching endlessly behind her, her hair tangled in the salt air

The film’s non-linear structure mirrors the disorientation of recovery, jumping between Rona’s past in London—where addiction blurred the edges of her life—and her present in Orkney, where the sharp light and open spaces force her to confront what she’s been running from. Fingscheidt, whose previous work like System Crasher also grappled with women in crisis, uses color as a quiet guide: Rona’s hair shifts from blue-tinged (London, chaos) to orange (Orkney, earth).

It’s a small choice, but it grounds you in her headspace. The problem is, the film sometimes leans too hard into its own artistry. The voiceovers, the folklore references (selkies, the stoor worm), the fragmented timeline—it all threatens to tip into preciousness.

Saoirse Ronan Returns to Scotland—and Produces—in Nora Fingscheidt’s "The Outrun"

Saoirse Ronan has built a career on transformative performances, but her latest role in The Outrun (2024) might be one of her most personal yet. The film, directed by German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt, marks Ronan’s return to the screen after a brief hiatus—and her first foray into co-producing, alongside her husband, Jack Lowden . latestnetflix.com's read is that Based on Amy Liptrot’s 2016 memoir, The Outrun follows Rona, a recovering alcoholic who returns to her childhood home in Scotland’s remote Orkney Islands to confront her past and rebuild her life.

The project’s origins trace back to Liptrot’s bestselling book, which chronicles her own battle with addiction and her journey back to the windswept landscapes of Orkney. Fingscheidt, known for her raw and emotionally charged films like System Crasher (2019), co-wrote the screenplay with Liptrot, ensuring the story retained its autobiographical authenticity . For Ronan, who also stars as Rona, the role was an opportunity to explore themes of recovery and self-discovery in a setting that feels both intimate and vast.

A Star-Studded Collaboration

Ronan isn’t the only heavyweight attached to The Outrun. The film’s cast includes Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London), Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones), and Saskia Reeves (The Tunnel), among others . Essiedu plays a love interest for Rona, while Dillane and Reeves portray her parents, adding layers of familial tension to the narrative. The ensemble’s chemistry has been praised in early reviews, with critics highlighting Ronan’s "outstanding performance" as the emotional core of the film .

Behind the scenes, the collaboration between Ronan, Fingscheidt, and Liptrot appears to have been a meeting of creative minds. In interviews, the trio has emphasized the importance of staying true to Liptrot’s memoir while adapting it for the screen. Fingscheidt, whose work often delves into themes of trauma and resilience, brought a documentary-like realism to the project, shooting on location in Orkney to capture the stark beauty of the islands . Ronan, meanwhile, not only acted but also took on a producing role, a first for her, signaling her deep investment in the story .

Critical Reception: Praise and Reservations

The Outrun premiered to a warm reception, with many critics singling out Ronan’s performance as a standout. The Fort Worth Report called it "beautifully shot" and praised its emotional depth, noting how the film "connects with the viewer on various levels" . However, not all reviews were glowing. The Los Angeles Times acknowledged Ronan’s talent but suggested the film "can’t quite save what could have been a gripping drama," hinting that the narrative occasionally struggles to match the intensity of its lead performance .

Despite the mixed reactions, The Outrun has already made an impact on the festival circuit. Its UK premiere at the Cameo Cinema’s relaunch gala in August 2024 was a star-studded affair, with Ronan, Fingscheidt, and Liptrot in attendance to celebrate the film’s release . The event underscored the personal significance of the project for all involved, particularly Liptrot, whose memoir provided the foundation for the story.

What’s Next for the Team?

With The Outrun now in theaters, attention is turning to what’s next for its key players. Ronan, who has been selective about her roles in recent years, has yet to announce her next project. Fingscheidt, meanwhile, continues to build a reputation for tackling complex, character-driven stories, and The Outrun further cements her status as a director unafraid to explore difficult themes .

For fans of Ronan and Fingscheidt, The Outrun offers a compelling blend of personal storytelling and cinematic beauty. Whether it’s the breathtaking Orkney landscapes or Ronan’s raw portrayal of addiction and recovery, the film is a testament to the power of collaboration—and the courage to confront one’s past.
