I've been thinking about fingerprints lately. Not the ones you leave on a glass. The ones pressed into the surface of a Wallace & Gromit film, tiny accidental imprints of human hands that give the characters their texture.
In Vengeance Most Fowl, the sixth Aardman adventure, those fingerprints are everywhere. They are a production mark. They also read as a refusal to go smooth.
This film will not let go of the past, even as it pokes at the future. Wallace builds a "smart" gnome named Norbot, then watches the thing spiral. That is the plot.
It is the film arguing with itself about nostalgia and progress, clay versus the frictionless stuff that fills most screens now. Vengeance Most Fowl still feels like a hug. It also feels like a small warning.
You see the handling before you see the plot. Not hyper-real CGI, every hair and pore rendered until it feels wrong. The clay models of Wallace and Gromit have been shaped, reshaped, and loved into existence.
