3 min readThe kangaroo is the size of a car
I went into Adventure Beast looking for a reason to switch it off. Adult animation that wants to teach is usually a lecture wearing a funny hat. The Magic School Bus never had to sell that mix to grown-ups after it left PBS. Then Bradley Trevor Greive's zoologist grinned up at a kangaroo the size of a small car, and I put the remote down.
Greive co-created the series and voices the zoologist as a version of himself he has called a "nutcase." Fair. He globe-trots with his niece and an anxious assistant to "save wild beasts," stuffing wildlife facts into the gaps between gags.
The assistant's nerves do a lot of the comic lifting. The niece is the one who might still remember the animal when the bit is over. On paper this is a conservation ad that escaped into late night.
The show keeps lunging toward something stranger.

"Bizarre" is the word people reach for, and here it actually points at a picture. The jungle is lush and wrong. Animals come oversized and half-human.
The motion is bright and elastic, Looney Tunes in the timing, Ren & Stimpy in the faces. A manic grin, a cartoon bird on the shoulder, and a kangaroo that could flatten a jeep is a composition I can still see with my eyes closed. I sat there trying to decide if the series was in on the joke.
Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsBehind the Scenes of Adventure Beast: Netflix’s Quirky Animated Comedy
Netflix’s Adventure Beast (2021) arrived as a surprise package—a short-form animated comedy blending humor, adventure, and a dash of education. While the series flew under the radar for many, its behind-the-scenes story reveals a passion project driven by its cast, particularly Bradley Trevor Greive, latestnetflix.com contends, and a creative team eager to subvert expectations.
A Star-Driven Passion Project
Bradley Trevor Greive, best known for his work as an author and motivational speaker, took an unusually hands-on role in Adventure Beast. In interviews, Greive described the series as a labor of love, emphasizing its dual mission: to entertain and subtly educate. "We wanted to create something that kids and adults could enjoy together," he said in a conversation with co-creator Brian Frange . The show’s premise—a talking beast leading a team of misfits on globetrotting escapades—reflects Greive’s own adventurous spirit, though the extent of his creative input beyond voice work remains unclear.
Danice Cabanela and Josh Zuckerman round out the main cast, but details about their involvement are sparse. Unlike traditional animated series, Adventure Beast doesn’t lean on A-list celebrity power, instead banking on the charm of its characters and Greive’s enthusiasm. In a separate interview, Greive hinted at the challenges of balancing comedy with educational content, calling it "a tightrope walk" . Whether this approach resonated with audiences is debatable—the series holds a modest 4.7/10 rating on SensCritique, based on 46 votes .
The Netflix Factor: Short, Sweet, and Overlooked
Adventure Beast’s 18-minute runtime per episode suggests Netflix’s bet on bite-sized content, a strategy the platform has since scaled back. The show’s trailer promised a mix of slapstick humor and globe-trotting antics, with the Beast (voiced by Greive) as the chaotic centerpiece . Reviews, however, were mixed. One YouTube reaction called it "educational and funny," praising its attempt to sneak in trivia about geography and culture . Another reaction video was less forgiving, critiquing the humor as "hit-or-miss" .
The series’ reception raises questions about its future. With no official announcement for a second season, Adventure Beast appears to be a one-and-done experiment. Netflix has a history of canceling niche animated shows after a single season, and this may be another casualty of the platform’s shifting priorities.
Unanswered Questions and Rumors
Despite Greive’s visible enthusiasm, key details about Adventure Beast remain elusive. The director and showrunner are uncredited in available sources, leaving the creative hierarchy unclear. Rumors swirl about behind-the-scenes tensions—common in animated productions—but no evidence supports these claims. Similarly, the show’s budget, animation style, and production timeline are undocumented.
One unverified tidbit: Greive’s involvement may have extended beyond voice acting. In an interview snippet, he mentions "helping shape the scripts," but specifics are lacking . Without confirmation, this remains speculative.
Legacy: A Cult Favorite or Forgotten Experiment?
Adventure Beast’s legacy is still taking shape. Its low rating and lack of mainstream buzz suggest it didn’t break out, but its niche appeal—particularly among parents seeking "edutainment"—could earn it a second life. The show’s YouTube presence, including trailers and reactions, hints at a small but dedicated fanbase .
For now, Adventure Beast stands as a curious footnote in Netflix’s animated catalog: ambitious in concept, uneven in execution, and largely forgotten by the broader audience. Whether it was a creative triumph or a misfire depends on who you ask—but its behind-the-scenes story, driven by Greive’s passion, is its most compelling chapter.
