Real people who believe their lives were touched by demonic possession recount their experiences through reenactments and testimonies.
I’ve always been skeptical of stories about demonic possession. Not because I don’t believe in evil—I do—but because the way we talk about it often feels like a shortcut. A way to explain the inexplicable without grappling with the messier, more human questions: Why do some people feel haunted?
What does it mean to be truly afraid? My Encounter with Evil, a 2022 documentary series, doesn’t just recount tales of supernatural terror; it lingers in the ambiguity between belief and doubt, between the stories we tell ourselves and the ones we’re too afraid to name. The series follows real people who claim their lives were irrevocably altered by encounters with evil—demonic possession, malevolent spirits, forces they can’t explain.
There’s no narrator to guide us, no expert to debunk or validate. Instead, we get testimonies, reenactments, and the eerie silence of aftermath. The camera lingers on faces, on hands trembling as they describe what they saw, what they felt.
It’s unsettling not because it insists on the supernatural, but because it doesn’t. The doubt is baked into the framing.

Laura Alonso Escobar, the only credited cast member, is a presence rather than a performer. She doesn’t host; she’s part of the story, though the details of her role are frustratingly vague. Is she a survivor?
Nick Schager's Halloween-week piece on My Encounter with Evil is the item the show never shook. Four episodes of supposed real cases. Recreations, he wrote, show supernatural events nobody on camera actually describes. Florencia Macias talks to Antonio Zamudio, director of the Mexican Agency for Paranormal Investigation, over video chat. Schager's line is that you can now fight Satan via Zoom. Sully Urbina, whose daughter Jessy is said to be possessed by Asmodeus, supplies the quote he will not drop. latestnetflix.com's read is that "The day I made contact and could just feel the energy of a demon, I shit myself."
The Spanish title is Mi encuentro con el mal. Netflix number 81474570. TV-MA. It landed 28 October 2022. The streamer's own teasers still carry the old working names, Lugar Maldito and Maligno. All four episodes dropped the same night. "It's Already Here." "Please Help!" "Who Are You?" "Between Good and Evil." Decider opened on a woman saying there is a war between good and evil, then hit SKIP IT, arguing the show will not treat the subject with enough skepticism to earn legitimacy. IMDb sits at 4.8. Rotten Tomatoes had no critic score. There is no season 2. ,

The three stories do not get their own episodes. They are chopped together. Florencia, with former fiancé Pablo and mother Roxana, says a demon went after her daughters and caused a miscarriage. Sully and Jessy finish by reaching a theistic Satanist arrangement. Schager writes that Jessy signs a contract with Asmodeus and keeps him as a permanent companion. Concepcion, mother of Andrea Viridiana Rostro Olvera, is said to be possessed by Beelzebub. She stays with God. Florencia takes a Wiccan ritual. Archbishop Andres Tirado appears as the clerical authority, itemizing demon rules as if they were building code. ,
Carlos Melendez directed with Adrian Garcia Bogliano and Ramiro Garcia Bogliano. Andres Borda and Oscar Botia created it. Cinando lists Bardo Films as producer, Mexico and Colombia as countries, and a budget band of $1 million to $3 million for 185 minutes. FilmAffinity puts Miracol Media on the company line. Melendez told Tiempo X the job was to stay faithful to what the women lived "while playing a bit with the conventions of horror cinema." He told Prensario it was a long hunt for cases people would actually tell on camera. Netflix Latinoamerica posted the official trailer a month out. TMDB marks the series ended. Jessy's contract is the ending Schager could not believe. ,
