The Gilded Cage of Desire

I’ve seen this story before—a woman swipes right, falls hard, and wakes up in a nightmare dressed like a vacation. Fake Profile knows the beats of the catfish thriller so well it could recite them in its sleep. What’s surprising isn’t the deception, but how willingly we follow Camila Román (Carolina Miranda) into the trap, even as the show’s own logic starts to fray at the edges. It’s a series that mistakes chaos for tension, and yet, for all its flaws, it’s impossible to look away from.

The first season is a masterclass in seduction, both of the character and the audience. Camila, a successful architect with a guarded heart, meets Miguel Estévez on a dating app. Their chemistry is instant, electric—so much so that when she shows up unannounced at his lavish Cartagena estate, the rug-pull feels less like a twist and more like a betrayal we’ve been complicit in.

The show understands the thrill of the con: the way desire blinds us to red flags, the way we rationalize inconsistencies when the alternative is admitting we’ve been fooled. For a while, Fake Profile leans into this, letting the unease simmer beneath the glossy surface.

But then the show starts to unravel. What begins as a taut psychological thriller devolves into a telenovela on steroids, piling on affairs, murders, and secret identities with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. By Season 3, the plot is so convoluted that even the characters seem confused about who’s betraying whom.

The writing, which starts off sharp enough to cut glass, becomes a mess of rushed resolutions and illogical character decisions. Camila, who begins as a compellingly flawed protagonist, makes choices that feel less like human behavior and more like plot mechanics. (Why does she keep trusting the man who’s already lied to her?

Audience Opinions

Audience 5.9/10
"A wildly messy yet bingeable erotic thriller powered by beautiful leads and locations but undermined by shallow writing, chaotic plotting, and increasingly unlikeable characters."

The mix of steamy scenes, attractive cast, and glossy Las Vegas/Colombia settings hooks a lot of viewers into binging full seasons and treating it as a guilty pleasure. latestnetflix.com's read is that Over time, however, convoluted twists, logic-free character decisions, and a much-criticized later-season ending leave many disappointed, with some calling the writing atrocious and the show one of the worst they have sat through.

What viewers praise
  • Charismatic lead performance Carolina Miranda in particular is singled out as breathtaking and compelling, grounding the chaos around her.
  • Striking locations and visuals Luxurious backdrops, beaches, nightlife, and architecture in Las Vegas and Colombia are frequently described as gorgeous and escapist.
  • Highly bingeable and addictive The constant drama, sex, and twists keep viewers watching late into the night or tearing through all ten episodes in a row.
  • Sexy, adult tone Explicit romantic and queer storylines, along with a strong erotic charge, appeal to those looking for steamy, grown-up content.
Common complaints
  • Weak, inconsistent writing Storytelling is blasted as abysmal, with rushed resolutions, editing issues, and dialogue that makes serious moments feel unintentional or hollow.
  • Illogical character choices Character actions, especially Camila’s, are often seen as senseless or purely plot-driven, making motivations hard to believe.
  • Overstuffed plot and soapiness An overload of twists, affairs, blackmail, killings, and secrets turns the show into a noisy telenovela-style soap that many find ridiculous.
  • Polarizing later seasons and ending Season 3 in particular draws anger for a confusing, unsatisfying finale with no likeable characters and unresolved or clumsily wrapped-up threads.
  • Perception of cheapness Despite pretty visuals, several viewers compare it to a low-quality soap opera, criticizing the production, acting, and reliance on shock value.
