The Genie’s Dilemma: When Magic Can’t Fix a Broken Story

I’ll admit it—I laughed out loud in the first ten minutes of Genie, Make a Wish. Kim Woo-bin, playing a genie named Iblis (yes, that Iblis), materializes in a puff of CGI smoke, squints at the modern world like a confused time traveler, and deadpans, “Humans still use these tiny rectangles to talk?” The line lands because Woo-bin sells it with the perfect mix of arrogance and bewilderment, his sharp cheekbones casting shadows that make him look like he’s judging us all. For a moment, I thought this might be the rare fantasy rom-com that actually works—one where the magic feels as lived-in as the messiness of the humans it’s meant to serve.

But then the wishes start piling up, and so do the problems. Genie, Make a Wish wants to be a lot of things at once: a screwball comedy, a tragic romance, a meditation on emotional numbness, a visual love letter to Dubai’s skyline, and—somehow—a story about a genie who may or may not be the Islamic equivalent of the devil. It’s a lot. Too much, really.

The show’s biggest wish, it turns out, is for coherence.

The premise is simple enough: Suzy plays Yeo Jin, a woman born without the ability to feel emotions, who accidentally frees Iblis from a 1,000-year imprisonment. In exchange for her freedom, he offers her three wishes. The catch?

Every wish comes with a curse, and Iblis, being a genie with a flair for the dramatic, isn’t exactly forthcoming about the fine print. What follows is a series of increasingly convoluted attempts by Yeo Jin to “fix” her emotional void, only to discover that the real problem isn’t her lack of feelings—it’s that she’s never been allowed to want anything for herself.

That’s a compelling idea, and Suzy sells it with a physicality that’s often overlooked in K-drama heroines. She moves through the world like someone who’s spent her life observing emotions rather than feeling them—her posture is stiff, her smiles are practiced, and her eyes are always calculating, even when she’s supposed to be in love. There’s a scene in Episode 4 where she tries to cry on command, her face contorting into something that’s supposed to resemble grief but looks more like a child mimicking a sad face in a mirror.

It’s uncomfortable, and it’s supposed to be. Suzy’s performance is the show’s most consistent strength, a quiet rebellion against the genre’s tendency to equate emotional depth with tearful monologues.

Audience Opinions

Audience 7.2/10
"A visually lush fantasy romance elevated by standout lead chemistry but dragged down by messy pacing, uneven writing, and a polarizing religious controversy."

Chemistry between Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, slick visuals (especially the Dubai material), and an emotional, music-driven romance make the show addictive and rewatchable for a large segment of viewers. At the same time, dense lore, undercooked subplots, uneven pacing, and the decision to name the genie 'Iblis' create frustration and backlash, with some dropping the show as childish, confusing, or offensive while others defend it as flawed but highly entertaining. Overall sentiment skews positive among those who stay with it to the end, latestnetflix.com contends, but the controversy and structural issues significantly depress ratings and word of mouth.

What viewers praise
  • Explosive lead chemistry Kim Woo-bin and Suzy’s relationship is repeatedly singled out as electric, with banter, tension, and romantic payoff that keep viewers hooked even when the plotting stumbles.
  • Gorgeous visuals and VFX Location work in Dubai, rich production design, and polished CGI are praised for creating a striking, cinematic fantasy world.
  • Memorable soundtrack The OST is frequently described as fitting, emotional, and a big part of why key scenes land as powerfully as they do.
  • Engaging fantasy–romance blend The chaotic mix of comedy, romance, and darker fantasy, along with the genie premise, is seen as fun, addictive escapism by those who connect with the tone.
  • Suzy’s character and performance Suzy’s turn as a guarded, occasionally unhinged heroine is highlighted as fresh and compelling, with several viewers calling her the best part of the show.
Common complaints
  • Religious insensitivity backlash Using the name 'Iblis' for a romantic genie lead is condemned by many Muslim viewers as disrespectful and misleading, leading to boycott calls and deliberate downrating.
  • Uneven pacing and structure The story feels sluggish or aimless in the middle, then suddenly rushed near the end, with some viewers quitting early and others complaining that later episodes are crammed and confusing.
  • Overstuffed lore and subplots Mythology, family backstories, and side characters pile up without enough development, leaving noticeable plot holes and a sense that a longer drama was awkwardly cut down.
  • Inconsistent tone and humor Shifts between clumsy slapstick, dark themes, and heartfelt melodrama can feel jarring, making it hard for some to take the stakes or romance seriously.
  • Underused supporting cast Well-liked actors in secondary roles, including Ahn Eun-jin, are perceived as underwritten or sidelined, missing chances to deepen the story.

The directors skipped the photocall. The genie still went to number one.

Kim Woo-bin sat a Gangnam press conference on 29 September 2025 and had to explain empty chairs. Lee Byeong-heon started Genie, Make a Wish, then left for personal reasons. Ahn Gil-ho, who directed The Glory with writer Kim Eun-sook, took over the second half. The Korea Herald noted Ahn's return after a 2023 school-violence controversy. The Korea Times said neither name appears as director in the end credits of episodes one through thirteen. Only the writer is listed. Kim said both men skipped the conference "out of consideration." He had liked working with Lee on Twenty. He called the split a bit disappointing, latestnetflix.com contends, then thanked Ahn for guiding them to a finish , .

Thirteen episodes dropped on 3 October, Chuseok week. Hwa&Dam Pictures and Studio Dragon. Dubai in February 2024. Wrap on 24 October 2024. Song Hye-kyo cameos as Jinniya, the genie's ex. Daniel Henney plays a character named Kim Gae , .

Boycott tags circulated. At home the Korea Times logged a different fight. Some called the dialogue childish and quit after episode one. Others stayed for the reunion , . Kim told the Herald his genie can be cheerful, cruel, trivial, even endearing, and that he worked to make a being who looks human feel off-beat . Suzy, playing Ka-young, the "righteous psycho" of the Herald's headline, said the script felt fresh. She described a woman with antisocial personality disorder who lives by rote learning, her grandmother, and village rules, and who ends up more righteous than the usual screen monster .

Netflix still got the chart. The week of 6 to 12 October 2025, the series was the most-watched non-English title, 8 million views, top 10 in 50 countries, number one in 10, including Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Peru , .
