I’ve been thinking about Leanne for days—not because it’s groundbreaking, but because it’s the kind of show that feels like slipping into a favorite armchair. The kind you sink into while the world outside hums with chaos, and for twenty minutes, everything is just… fine. That’s the paradox of this Netflix sitcom: it’s both a throwback and a quiet revelation, a show that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t apologize for it.
The premise is simple, almost painfully so. Leanne, a Southern woman in her late 50s, is left by her husband after 33 years of marriage. The show follows her as she stumbles through divorce, menopause, and the indignities of starting over, all while leaning on her sister Carol, her church community, and the kind of extended family that only exists in sitcoms—or maybe in the South.
It’s a setup we’ve seen before, from Roseanne to Grace Under Fire, but Leanne doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it polishes it until it gleams.
What makes Leanne work is Leanne Morgan herself. She’s not an actor in the traditional sense—she’s a stand-up comedian who built her career on observational humor about aging, marriage, and the absurdities of Southern life. And that voice is the show’s secret weapon.

Leanne Morgan and Chuck Lorre first pictured a single-camera show. Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter what happened next. Netflix asked, "Would y'all please consider doing a multicam and bringing that [format] back?" She thought, "Don't put that burden on me." Morgan's 2023 special I'm Every Woman put her on Netflix's comedy list. Tudum says she spent 25 years aiming at a sitcom. "When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom," she told the streamer. "I'm a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?" She also said filming in front of a live audience felt like home.

Deadline reported two weeks in Netflix's global Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at No. 6 with 2.8 million views, plus two weeks in the U.S. Top 10. The Hollywood Reporter added Nielsen's U.S. figure for the first two weeks: 1.34 billion minutes. Deadline noted that sits below the streamer's usual renewal bar. Freshman drama The Waterfront spent five weeks in the global Top 10 and still got canceled. Leanne got a second season on 8 September 2025 anyway. Multicam costs less to make. Netflix has kept few of them. Deadline named The Ranch, Fuller House, and The Upshaws as the ones that lasted. ,
